Siphonic discharging apparatus has a hydrostatic valve 16, 17, 18 19 and 20 to prime a double siphon 12, 13, 14, 15 and includes a siphon 16, 17, which is primed when water in a cistern reaches a pre-determined level and then withdraws air from the top of the part 14, 15 of the siphon 12, 13, 14, 15, which is thus primed. Water is fed to the siphon 16, 17 through an aperture 27 open to the cistern and it discharges directly to the outlet 25, below the outlet leg 15. The passages may be open channels in one side of a block, to which a plate may be secured to complete their formation or in one side of each of two blocks securable together to form them. The channelled block(s) can be formed by a moulding process, e.g. by blow-moulding synthetic resinous material. The apparatus may be tubes connected by webs formed by blow moulding or otherwise. An auxiliary siphon 23, 24 removes most of the water left in the siphon 12 to 15 after the latter has been broken. The valve 16 to 20 is primed when the water in a cistern flows over a weir 33. Pre-formed inserts may be used to form some of the passages. In a modification the construction is simplified to give a more compact unit than that shown. There may be a constriction with a flared exit at or close to the outlet of the final leg of the double siphon to give a Venturi tube effect to speed up the priming thereof.
