Abstract
1, 34, 675. Centrifugal separators. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT. May 9, 1963 [May 14, 1962], No. 18371/63. Heading B2P A centrifuge for separating aerosals or liquid or gaseous mixtures, e.g. isotopes, into components of different specific weights comprises a holder member driven at a high rotary speed and carrying a number of nozzles 8 arranged in series and each having on its entry side edges 11, 12 to collect the core of the mixture stream leaving the preceding nozzle and to feed it to the respective following nozzle, the mixture being supplied to the innermost nozzles through a sleeve 16 and the separated mixture components being discharged through outlets 21, 22. The nozzles 8 are arranged in spiral or, as shown, in radial form between discs 4, 5 which are spaced from discs 3, 6 on a hub 2 secured to a shaft 1 supported in air bearings and driven at speeds of 10,000 to 400,000 r.p.m. or above. Alternatively, the nozzles may be formed by the discs 4, 5 which are shaped accordingly or they may be arranged in a spiral duct. Each nozzle 8 consists of two rings 9, 10 pointed on their inner side to form the edges 11, 12 and spaced apart to form a narrow slot A having a width of 1-20 Á or above. Openings 13 are formed in the discs 4, 5 connecting the space between the discs 4, 5 with discharge passages 14, 15 leading to the outlets 22. In operation, the mixture is fed continuously to the sleeve 16 and as a result of centrifugal force passes through the innermost nozzle formed by a flange 17 on the sleeve and a disc 18. A spreading of the stream occurs beyond that nozzle, the core of which containing the heavier components is collected between the edges 11, 12 of the first nozzle 8 to be fed after further spreading to the second nozzle 8 and so on in stages, for further separation, to the last nozzle 21 and to the outlet 21. The separated outer part of the stream, containing the lighter components, is led away outwardly at each nozzle by the surfaces 19, 20 and pass through the openings 13 into the passages 14, 15 for discharge through the outlets 22.
