Abstract

Methyl bromide is prepared by reacting methyl chloride with hydrogen bromide at a temperature ranging between 250 DEG and 500 DEG C. to give a gaseous mixture, separating from this mixture any unreacted hydrogen bromide and the formed hydrogen chloride by absorption in an aqueous medium, the effluent gas being thereafter fractionated so as to separate out of it the methyl bromide, any monochloromono-bromomethane formed and any methyl chloride which has not reacted, the methyl chloride being recycled. The unreacted hydrogen bromide may be isolated and recycled. Examples are given.
