Tripping and throw-out arrangements. - A safety device and throw-off mechanism for printing-presses comprises a guard 49 which, when moved by an operator's hand or other obstruction, arrests the movement of a rocking platen 3 towards a stationary bed 2. The platen 3 rocks about a shaft 20 and is operated by toggle mechanism 9, 10, 12, 15, 19. A draw-bar 22 is connected to the toggle mechanism by an auxiliary link 29, which, in the normal working of the machine, is held in line with the draw-bar by a spring 42 pressing a shoulder 44 against a pin 46. A bar 50 fixed to the guard 49 normally engages a projection 51 on a pivoted member 38 and holds a pawl 39 out of contact with teeth on a bar 34, which is connected to an extension 32 of the link 29 and reciprocates in a swinging bracket 37. When the guard 49 is raised by an obstruction, the pawl 39 holds the bar 34, and the link 29 is forced out of line with the draw-bar 22, as shown, arresting the stroke of the platen 3. When the obstruction is removed, the bar 50 engages the projection 51 and lifts the pawl 39. The guard 49 may be utilized as a manually-operated throwoff mechanism.
