SAFETY DEVICE. FOR FOOT PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
Application filed October 28, 1920. Serial No. 420,181.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. HUGO C. Panornr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Devices for Foot Presses; and I- do hereby declare the following, when taken in connec tion with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon. to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application., and represent, in-
Fig. 1 a side view illustrating my improved stop mechanism as applied to a foot power press.
Fig 2 a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 a side view showing the hammer partly depressed, and the movement of the foot lever arrested in full lines and free in broken lines.
Fig. 4 a top view of the safety plate detached.
Fig. 5 an edge view of the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in safety devices for foot presses. these devlces interposed be ween the hammer and the anv1l. wh1ch w ll prevent the downward stroke of the hammer if the hand of the operator is between them.
The object of the invention is a simple arrangement of parts including an arm carried by the foot lever. the movement of which will be stopped. should the hand of the operator be between the hammer and anvil. and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In illustrating mv invention I have shown it applied to the foot press of usual construction. including a head 10. table 11. anvil 12, hammer 13, and hammer lever 14. which is extended down and provided. with a pedal 15 by which the hammer is forced down. Cl amped to the lever 14 is a plate 16 formed with a longitudinal slot 17 into which ex tends a roller pin 18 mounted on a lug 19 projecting downward from the lower edqe of a stop lever 20 which is pivoted at its inner end to a bracket 21. beneath the table .11 of the press, and provided at its outer end with a stop lug 23 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. The lever 20 is connected by a pitman 2a with asafety lever 25 which is'pivoted to the frame of the press and extends between the hammer and anvil having a bowedend 26 to clear the punch 22 of the hammer. i
In the normal operation of the machine, pressure upon the pedal 15 will force the hammer 13 downward onto the anvil 12 and the safety lever 25 is allowed to move downward. under tension of the spring 27 and during this movement the plate 16 freely rides upon the pin 18 and in its rearward movement clears the lug 23, the lever 20 being lifted by the spring 27. Should the hand of the operator be upon the anvil, as indicated in Fig. of the drawings, as the hammer comes down the safety lever 25 will be stopped, so that in the rearward movement the plate 16 engages with the lug 23 whereby further movement of the lever 14 is arrested and hence the downward movement of the hammer is stopped. The pitman 24 may be connected with the levers 20 and 25 at various points, so that the de vice may be adjusted to presses having different throws and the plate 16 is also adjustably connected with the lever 14 so that the parts may be adiusted as required, although when once adjustedto a particular machine will not require further attention. It will be noted that the inner end of the slot 17 forms a cam surface coacting with the pin 18 and the slot is formed with a clearance curve 28 and with a step 29 which permits the lever 20 to be lifted and the safety lever 25 to come down quicklv when there is no obstacle in its path. The first part of the movement is slow so that the outer end of the lever 25 comes down with a speed corresponding to the downward movement of the hammer until. it reaches a substantially horizontal position, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 3. 'At this time if there is no obstruction. the pin 18 which may carry a roller. rides up the step 29. allowing; the safety device to drop suddenly onto the anvil. as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3.
I claim:
1. The combination with a foot ress having a frame, a hammer and a foot-lever. of a plate mounted on the foot lever and formed with a slot, a stop lever pivotally connected with the press frame and carryino: a pin travelling in the slot in said plate. said stop lever formed at its outer end with a stop lug, a safety lever pivoted to the frame, with one end extending into the path of the hammer and connected at its other end with the stop lever. v p
2. The combination witha foot press having a frame, a hammer and a foot lever, of a plate adjustably connected with the foot-lever and formed with a cam slot, a stop lever pivotally connected with a machine frame and carrying a pin which extends into the said slot, said stop lever being formed at its outer end with a stop lug, a safety lever pivotally connected with the frame, one end extending into the path of the hammer, and adjustably connected at its other end With the said stop lever.
3. The combination with a foot press having a frame, a hammer and a foot lever, of a plate adjustably connected with the footlever and formed with a cam slot, at stop lever plvotally connected with a machine frame and "carrying a pm which extends into thesaid slot, said stop lever being formed lng witnesses. a t 1 HUGO C.
