SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR PRESSES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. WAGANDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety attachment for presses and has particular reference to an improved device for use on stam ing presses where the operator is obliged to eed the work to the ress by hand and is liable to be injured by re easing or tripping the power mechanism before the hands are removed from the dies.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of mechanical safety device that will require the use of both hands to effect the tripping or the release of the clutch device before the dies can be brought together, so that with both hands employed, the operator cannot be injured.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the upper portion of a press having my improved device attached thereto. Fig. 2 illustrates a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 shows in a diagrammatic form the relation the parts of the improved device have with respect to each other, but eliminates the press mechanism.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral, 1, designates the frame of the ress; 2, the die bed; 3, the cross-head whic carries one of the die members to coact with counterpart die-members on the bed, and, 4, the crank for vertically reciprocating the cross-head. A shaft, 5, is mounted horizontally in the frame and carries a clutch, 6, and a fly-wheel or pulley, 7. All of the devices are of the ordinary construction and have an operation common to presses now in use and a more detailed description of the same is deemed unnecessary.
In the o eration of presses of this character the c utch, 6, is frequently released through the actuation of a hand lever, 8, which is pivoted at, 9, to the side of the press frame and which lever is pivotally connected by means of a link, 10, to a pivoted clutch pawl, 11. A weight, 12, is usually provided on the inner end of the hand lever tocounterbalance the same and a spring, 13, is employed to keep the operating end or Specification of Letters Patent.

In carrying out my invention I propose to provide a stop device that will directly engage and lock the hand lever so as to prevent independent movement of the latter as will now be explained.
At any suitable and convenient stationary point I secure two bracket bearings, 15, which sustain a horizontal rock bar or shaft, 16, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The operative end of this rock bar or shaft carries an oscillating arm, 17, which in the present instance extends or projects upwardly and at its upper end has a ead, 18, which normally has position directly beneath the lower or bottom edge, 19, of the hand lever, 8.
When the press is in the normal inoperative condition with the hand lever in the elevated condition, the head, 18, of the oscillating arms, 17, is in close contact with the said bottom surface of the hand lever so that the lattelr cannot be depressed to trip the clutch aw P The operating end of the rock bar or shaft is rigidly connected to a trip lever which latter, in the resent instance comprises a substantially orizontal portion, 21, having a counterweight, 22 an upwardly-inclined portion, 23, and a hand-operating portion, 24, at its uppermost end as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The rigid connection between the rock bar or shaft and the trip lever is made at, -25, on the horizontal portion so that when the hand portion, 24, of the trip lever is pulled down slightly the said lever will be rocked so as to produce'a similar rocking motion to the bar or shaft, 16, and during this movement, the oscillating arm, 17 and head, 18, will be swung through an arc and thus lowered from its contact with the hand lever, 8, as clearly shown by broken lines in Fig. 3.
A rigid bracket bar, 26, having a hookshaped lower end, 27, is connected in any suitable manner at the side of the frame and this bar has a stationary osition so that the horizontal portion, 21, of the trip lever may rest on the hook-end and thereby be supported so as to limit the downward movement of the weighted end of said lever and thereby limit the rearward movement of the oscillating arm and its head,18.
A pin, 28, is preferably providedin the bracket bar, 26, which pin extends horizontally over the portion, 21, of the trip lever and limits the upward movement of the same. It will therefore be seen that the trip lever has merely a slight movement in either direction and only sufficient movement to enable the depression of the hand lever, 8.
Bushings, 29, are preferably placed on the rock bar, 16, at the outer side of each bracket bearing to prevent horizontal movement of the latter and a displacement of the head, 18, from beneath the hand lever.
In operatin the press the operator will first lace the ilank or work between the die mem ers. The hand lever, 8, cannot be depressed or the clutch pawl released because the head, 18, of the oscillating arm prevents such operation. The operator must therefore grasp the trip lever, 24, and depress the same so as to swing the head, 18, outwardly, and hold it there whereupon with the other hand, the lever, 8, may be depressed and the press set in motion. The two levers may then be released and the press then makes the single stroke and again becomes stationary.
It will thus be seen that both hands must be employed before the tripping of the press can be effected and the operation of the trip lever alone will not cause the die to move.
The movement of both hand levers is purposely made slight so as to enable a speedy o eration and also to diminish the labor of t e operator.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. The combination with a die, of mechanism for reciprocating the same, a clutch including a trip, a hand lever at one side of the die for operating the clutch trip, a hand trip lever at the opposite side of the die, and mechanical devices operating between the two hand levers whereby to prevent the independent operation of the hand lever.
2. The combination with a die, of mechanism for reciprocating the same, a clutch having a trip, a hand lever for operatin the clutch trip, a hand trip lever, astop forIocking the hand lever against movement, and
connections between the stop and the hand trip lever for releasing the hand lever.
3. The combination with a die, of mechanism for reciprocating the same, a clutch having a trip, a hand lever for o aerating the clutch trip, an oscillating arm for engaging the hand lever, a pivoted hand trip lever, and means operated by the pivoted hand trip lever for oscillating the arm and releasing the hand lever.
4. The combination with a die, of mechanism for reciprocating the same, a clutch having a tri a pivoted hand lever for oper ating the c utch trip, an oscillating arm swinging at the side of the pivoted hand lever and normally locking the same against movement, a pivoted trip lever also operated by hand and a rock shaft connecting the trip lever with the oscillating arm.
5. The combination with a frame of a die mounted in said frame, mechanism for reciprocating the die, a clutch having a trip, a hand lever pivoted at one side of the frame and operatively connecting the clutch trip, an oscillating arm swinging at the side of the pivoted hand lever and normally locking the same against movement, a hand trip lever pivoted at the opposite side of the frame, a rock shaft extending crosswise of the frame and connecting the trip lever and oscillating arm and stops to limit the movement of said trip lever.
6. In a safety device for stamping presses the combination with a clutch inc uding a trip, of a hand-lever for operating the clutchtrip; a second hand-lever, and mechanical. devices operating between the said two hand levers, the said parts being so arranged as to require the use of both hands of the operator when the two parts of the dies are brought together.
