Specification of Letters Patent.
. z Patented Jan. 27, 1914.
Application flled September 23, 1913. Serial No. 791,410.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HERMAN R.. BLUM- BERG, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Presses, of which the following is a specification. v
The invention relates to safety devices, and more particularly to the class of safety attachments for presses, such as power blanking presses used for piercing, stamping, forming, bending, etc.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character. wherein the power mechanism of the press is locked so that it will be impossible 'for the operator to become injured thereby,
as the attachment has to be manipulated by both hands of the operator for trippingthe power mechanism.
-Another object of the invention is the provision of a safety attachment for presses wherein the liability of injury to the operator, which frequently happens by not removing the' hands from the pressbefore the power mechanism is set in action, is 'obv1- ated, the safety attachment being manually controlled and is adapted to be actuated by .both hands of the operator before the power mechanism can become active.
A-further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of, this character wherein the press is provided with a lock to prevent the release of the trip rod,
thus enabling the controllin of the press by the operator, thereby ena ling the handling of the work to and from the press with safety. a
A further object-of the invention is the provision of a device ofthis character which 1s simple in construction, reliablei and efiicient 1n its operation, and inexpensivein manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists inthe construction; combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto'appended. In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation offa press, showing the safety attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the safety attachment. Fig. 3 1s a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1 look ing toward the opposite side of the machine.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawin Iteferring to the framing by numerals, 5 deslgnates generally a stamping or other press, and 6 the trip rod which is controlled by the foot tread-1e of the press for setting the power mechanism in action or stopping the'same.
The safety attachment comprises a substantlally U-shaped bail 7, -th e"side limbs of which extend on opposite sides of the press and are connected to studs 8 which are screwed into the sides of the press and form plvots for the said bail. Arranged exteriorly of the bail 7 paralleLwith -the side supported upon a pivot stud 10. passed through the limbs adjacent thereto of the ball, the said stud 10 being formed with an aperture or hole 11 inwhich is received the trip rod 6 of the press, the said rod being secured in the stud 10 through the medium of binding screw 12 which isthreaded in the stud and engages the said rod. Mounted in the outer free ends of the latch arms 9 are handles 13, while formed at the inner pivoted ends of the said arms are downturned latch extensions 14 which are adapted to ride over and engage lock pins 15 screwed into the sides of the press, the latch exten-' latch extensions 14 from the lock pins 15 on the press and also to limit the swinging Ihovements of the arms 9 when the latch extensions 14 automatically engage and lock with the said pins, 15 for preventing the trip rods 6 from being operated by the foot treadle of he press. 1
' Suitably. connected tothe side limbs of the bail 7 and to the latch extensions .151 of the arms 9 are coiled retractile springs 19 -'which serve to hold the latch extensions 14 in the path of the-lock'pins so that -the' .said extensions will automatically engage'there with for'the locking of the trip rods when the power mechanism has moved to the fullest extent of its up-stroke.
It will be apparent that before the power mechanism can become active it is necessary for the operator of the press to grip the handles 13 and apply a downward pressure on the arms 9 for disengaging the latch extensions 14 from the lock pins, and thereafter the foot treadle can be operated for setting in motion the power mechanism of the press, and in this manner injury to the operator is avoided.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety device for machinery comprisa movable bail, latch arms pivotally connected with the bail and having latch extensions, locking ins stationarily mount-- ed upon the piece 0 machinery and engaged by the latch extensions to prevent the movement of the bail for setting in motion the power mechanism of the machinery.
2. A safety devicev for machinery comprising a movable bail, latch arms pivotally connected with the bail and having latch extensions, locking pins stationarily 'mounted upon the piece of .machinery and engaged by the latch extensions to prevent the movement of the bail for setting in motion the power mechanism of the machinery, and means connected with the bail and the latch extensions for holding the latter in the path of the locking pin.
3. A safety device for machinery comprising a movable bail, latch arms pivotally connected with the bail and having latch extensions, locking ins stationarily mounted upon the piece 0 machinery and engaged by the latch extensions to prevent the movement of the bail for setting in motion the power mechanism of the machinery, means connected with the bail and the latch extensions for holding thelatter in the path .of the locking pin, and means on the bail "and engageable with the arms to limit the swinging movement thereof. 1 4. A safety device for machiner comprising a movable bail, latch arms p1votally connected with the bail and having latch extensions, locking pins statidnarily mounted upon the piece of machinery and engaged by the latch extensions to prevent the movement of the bail for setting in motion the power mechanism of the machinery, means connected with the bail'andthe latch extensions for holding the latter in the path of the locking pin, means on the bail and engageable with the arms to limit the swingmg movement thereof, and handles carried bv the latch arms,
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN R. BLUMBERG.
