SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR HAND-FED POWER-PRESSES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK S. ALI'ANO, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Appliances for Hand-Fed Power-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to safety appliances for hand fed power presses, and more particularly to a device disposed between the punch and the operator, which will prevent the hand of the operator from entering beneath the punch while said punch isdesccnding.
The main object of the invention is to provide an appliance of this character which may be readily applied to any press of standard design, and which will have actuating means within the operative scope of the eccentric shaft in order to insure the actuation of the appliance with every rotation of said shaft.
A still further object is to provide an appliance of this character wherein the force actuating same will be so reduced as to prevent injury to the hand of the operator from the guard plate.
A still further object to provide an appliance of this character adapted to be actuated through the trip pedal, and also through the eccentric shaft, in order to insure an operation of the device under conditions when the said eccentric shaft rotates independently of the trip mechanism, which sometimes occurs when the clutch becomes caught or is broken.
A still further object is to provide an appliance of this character, having a double control, one of which is manually operative, and the other of which is mechanically operative, wherein the manually operative control will under normal conditions act prior to the mechanical control, thus causing said mechanical control to act only in emergency cases when said manual control inoperative. And a still further object is to provide an appliance of this character which will be capable of being applied to any press; which will be positive in its operation, and which will protect the operator from accidents resulting from any defect Specification of Letters Patent.

in the press mechanism developed while the press is running The invention consists primarily in a safety appliance for hand fed power presses, embodying therein a guard plate disposed between the punch and the operator, an eccentric shaft controlling the punch, a con tact carried by said shaft eccentrically thereof, an oscillatory lever mounted within the (iperative range of said contact, and a lever system connecting said lever with said guard plate, whereby said plate will be actuated through the rotation of said shaft; and in such other novel features of construction and comliiination of parts as are hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the drawings h igure 1 is an elevation of one side of a press embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side of said press; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail View of the mechanism for mechanically controlling the actuation of said guard; and Fig. 4t is a similar view of the mechanism for manually controlling the operation of said guard.

In the form of the invention shown in the accon'ipanying drawings, a indicates an ordinary hand fed power press having a punch b and an eccentric shaft 0 actuating said punch. The power is applied to said press through the fly wheel (Z which is adapted to be connected to the shaft 0 by a clutch mechanism of the usual construction under the controlv of the trip treadle c. l\"lounted upon the bed of the press between the punch Z) and the ope *ator is a plurality of adj ustable standards having rotatively mounted therein a rock shaft g carrying a guard plate 72. projecting from said shaft toward and below the punch 7). Upon one side of the rock shaft is a crank arm g. Upon the same side of the press as this crank arm 9 is a bell crank lever one arm i. of which is connected to the said crank arm 9 by the connecting rod j and the other arm of which is connected to the trip treadle c by means of the rod 71: and to the clutch connecting the 'fly wheel (Z to the eccentric shaft 0, by the rod Z. To permit the actuation of the guard plate prior to the actual setting of this clutch, I provide lost motion between the rod Z and the arm which construction insures the raising of the guard plate h prior ming of the clutch, or an overrunning of the eccentric shaft 0, the punch Z) is no longer under the control of the trip mechanism and the guard plate It is thus rendered inoperative. Under such conditions injury to the hands of the operator is liable to occur, and to provide a safeguard against mishaps of this character, I provide supplemental means under the control of the eccentric shaft ,0 so that with each rotation of said shaft this guard will be actuated independently of the manually controlled trip mechanism, and prior to the descent of the punch. This mechanism I have illustrated more particularly in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
Mounted upon the frame of the press a adjacent to the end of the shaft 0 is a bell crank lever m, one end of which has a cam surface m formed thereon, projecting across the end of said shaft. Carried by the said shaft 0 and adapted to engage said cam surface m is a contact n mounted eccentrically of said shaft. Mounted upon the frame of the press adjacent to the bed is a bell crank lever 0 one arm 0' of which is connected by the link p with the other arm m of the lever m. The arm 0 of the lever 0 is connected by a link 9 with a crank arm g carried by the rock shaft g. The pitch of the cam surface m upon the arm m and the leverage of the levers m 0 are such as to avoid any substantial velocity being imparted to the plate, thus avoiding injury to the hands of the operator through the movement of said plate. This arrangement of parts will at the same time impart a timely and slow movement to the plate It and cause its actuation prior to any movement of the punch which would injure the hand of the operator.
The operation of the herein described appliance when attached to a press, is substantially asfollows:When the press is at rest, the guard plate It occupies a horizon tal position between the punch and the operator, and in feeding the press, the operator feeds across this plate. a piece has been properly set upon the die,
Assuming that the trip treadle e is depressed by the operator, which oscillates the lever i, which lever in turn through the rod j and crank arm 9' oscillates the rock shaft 9 and with it the guard plate It, this plate moving upwardly and toward the operator, thus causing the foot of the operator to force his hands away and the arm 2' of the lever z permits the said rock shaft 9 to be actuated prior to the actuation of the clutch mechanism, the completion of the movement of said guard plate it being consummated simultaneously with the setting of this clutch. l/Vhen the plate It has been actuated in the manner described, it will occupy a vertical position as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, and will serve as a barrier between the operator and the punch, which will prevent the accidental placing of the hand under the punch until the clutch mechanism has been reset after the completion of the punch stroke. This operation is as described in my Letters Patent above referred to. lVith a press in perfect condition, the guard actuated by the trip treadle acts as a safeguard against accidents, but in case the eccentric shaft 0 escapes from the control of the clutch mechanism, either through the jamming of the clutch, or the overrunning of the shaft' supplemental guard plate control becomes operative only when the manually controlled actuating means are inoperative, or are dispensed with. 7
Assuming that the press is not in perfect order, and that the eccentric shaft 0 is not under the control of the trip treadle e, as the shaft 0 rotates, the tappet 17, carried thereby eccentrically thereof will, prior to the initiation, or substantially with the initiation, of the down stroke of the punch, en-
gage the cam surface m upon the arm m of the lever m and oscillate this lever, which through the link 2), bell crank lever 0, link 9, and crank. arm 9 upon the shaft will oscillate this shaft and the guard plate It carried thereby in the same manner as this shaft and guard are oscillated by the trip mechanism of the press. The movement of the levers m.,and,0.and the leverage exerted thereby are such that the rise of the plate 12 is at a speed sufliciently great to prevent any possibility of the hand of the operator remaining under the punch as it descends, while at the same time preventingthe,de' velopment of such velocity in the plate as would cause the impact of the said plate with the hand of the operator to injure it in anyway. It Will be observed that the guard plateh may thus be either manually or mechanically oscillated by means of the rock shaft .9 and that when this rock shaft is actuated through the trip treadle e the movement of said shaft will, through the connection between said shaft and the lever on throw the arm m of said lever out of the operative relation to the eccentric pin n and thus cause the plate It to be actuated under normal conditions by the foot of the operator. The cam surface m of the lever m is however, normally inoperative relationto the pin a so that in case of a failure of the treadle mechanism to 0 erate upon the shaft g the said shaft 0 will actuate said guard plate. Under some conditions, even though a press be out of order, it is absolutely essential that it be continued in service, and with this supplemental attachment, the plate It will oscillate with each down stroke of the punch and permit the feeding of the press.
The plate h whether actuated manually or mechanically is restored to normal by the treadle spring which is indicated in the accompanying drawings by the letter T.
It is not my intention to limit the invention to the precise details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it being apparentthat such may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is
1. A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space disposed between the punch and the operator, an eccentric shaft control" ling the punch, a contact carried by said shaft eccentrically thereof, an oscillatory lever mounted within the operative range of said contact, and a lever system connecting said lever with said guard plate whereby said plate will be actuated through the rotation of said shaft.
2. A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein an oscillatory guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space disposed between the punch and the operator, an eccentric shaft controlling the punch, a contact carried by said shaft eccentrically thereof, an oscillatory lever mounted within the operative range of said contact, and a lever sys tom connecting said lever with said guard plate whereby said plate will be moved upwardly and toward the operator through the rotation of said shaft.
3. A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein an oscillatory guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space disposed between the punch and the operator, an eccentric shaft controlling the punch, a contact carried by said shaft cccentrieally thereof, an oscillatory lover mounted adjacent to said shaft and having a cam surface thereon normally positioned within the operative range of said contact, and a lever system connecting said lever with said guard plate whereby said plate willv be actuated through the rotation of said shaft.

A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein an oscillatory shaft, a crank arm thereon, a guard plate carried thereby between the punch and the operator, an eccentric shaft controlling the punch, a contact carried by said shaft eccentrically thereof, a bell crank lever having one arm thereof within the operative range of said contact, a second bell crank lever, and connecting rods extending from the arms of said last named lever respectively to said crank arm and the other arm of said first named lever whereby said guard plate will be actuated through the rotation of said shaft.
5. A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate, manually operative means for actuating said plate, and supplemental actuating means for said plate, operative from the punch actuating means, whereby said plate may be actuated either manually or mechanically.

A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate, means actuated by the trip treadle whereby said plate is actuated prior to the setting of the clutch, and an emergency actuating means operative from the punch actuating means whereby said plate will be actuated if the treadle inoperative to control the punch.
7. A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein an oscillatory shaft, a plurality of crank arms carried thereby, a plate mounted on said shaft between the punch and the operator, and adapted to be raised upwardly and toward the operator, a treadle controlled clutch actuating mechanism, a lever system connecting one of said crank arms with said mechanism, and a supplemental emergency actuating mechanisn'i for said plate, comprising a contact carried by the eccentric shaft controlling the punch and eccentrically thereof, a bell crank lever mounted adjacent to and one arm of which is within the operative range of said contact, and a lever system connecting the other arm of said bell crank lever with said other crank arm whereby said guard plate will be actuated from said eccentric shaft if said clutch actuating mechanism is inoperative.
8. A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein an oscillatory shaft, a plurality of crank arms carried thereby, a plate mounted on said shaft be tween the punch and the operator, and adapted to be raised upwardly and toward the operator, a treadle controlled clutch actn ating mechanism, a lever system connecting one of said crank arms with said mechanism, and a supplemental emergency actuating mechanism for said plate, comprising a con.- tact carried by the eccentric shaft controlling the punch and eccent-rically thereof, a bell crank lever mounted adjacent to and one arm of which is provided with a cam surface within the operative range of said contact, and a lever system connecting the other arm of said bell crank lever with said other crank arm whereby said guard plate will be actuated from said eccentric shaft if said clutch actuating mechanism is inoperative.
9. A safety appliance for hand fed power presses, embodying therein an oscillatory one of said crank arms with said mechanism,
and a supplemental emergency actuating mechanism for said plate, comprising an eccentric shaft controlling the punch, a contact carried by said shaft eccentrically thereof, a bell crank lever having one arm thereof within the operative range of said contact, a second bell crank lever, and connecting rods extending from the arms of said last named lever respectively to said crank arm and the other arm of said first named lever whereby said guard plate will be actuated through the rotation of said shaft if said clutch actuating mechanism is inoperative.
