To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANK S. ALIANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Safety Appliances for Hand Fed PowerPresses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had there in to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention'relates to safety appliances for hand fed power presses and more particularly to improvements in the type of appliances patented to me under date of July 1, 1913, Letters Patent No. 1,066,459, wherein an oscillatory guard plate positioned between the die and the operator is moved upwardly and toward the operator with each actuation of the trip mechanism for the controlling clutch or by a lever system operated from the shaft actuating the ram.
In a safety appliance made in accordance with my invention, I so construct the actuating mechanism for the guard plate, that the power for setting the said guard plate, whether applied manually or through an emergency mechanism actuated from the power shaft, is transmitted through the same mechanism, thus not only simplifying the structure and installation of the appliance but insuring greater reliability in its mode of operation.
To secure other and further advantages, the guard plate is connected with,'and actuated by a member having two sections, one of which is operative solely by the emergency actuating mechanism under the control of the ram shaft and the other of which is operative solely by the clutch tripping mechanism. In this manner, I am enabled to prevent the movement of the pedal, with its possibility of injury to the operator, when the guard is operated from the ram shaft, as in the case of the failure of the clutch or other disarrangement of the controlling means for said ram shaft.
In addition to this, the operator is prevented from tripping the press by raising the guard plate by hand, since the section of the actuating member connected with the pedal may transmit power to raise the guard, but is incapable of transmitting power from the guard to the clutch mechanism. V a f The energy for restoring the guard plate to normal after each actuation thereof by the pedal mechanism, is the pedal spring but the capability of ti e emergency 'mechanism to operate'the guard entirely independently of the pedal necessitates the use of an independent source of 7 energy to restore the guard to normal after each actuation thereof by said emergency mechanism.
While guards of the character herein referred to, are designed primarily to protect the hands of the operator, it is not uncommon for operators, after a guard has been installed on a press, to so set the guard that it will not operate as intended, and to operate the press under the same conditions as though no guard had been applied thereto. In the type of machine referred to inrmy aforesaid Letters Patent, operators sometimes would coni iiletely'reverse the guard plate, thus preventing its actuation by the foot pedal and at the same time, making the emergency mechanism inoperative. By using two independently operative sections controlling the guard plate, and providing means limiting the'movement of that section operatively connected with said plate to that required to properlyactuate the plate, it is impossible for theoperator to follow the practice above referred to. 7
In addition to the foregoing characteristics, a guard made in accordance with my invention is designed to force the hand or hands of the operator from below the punch 'or ram prior to the release of the clutch controlling the power shaft of the machine, and to cause the repeated actuationof the guard in synchronism with the movements of the ram, in the event that the clutch be co1itinuously inoperative to intermittently arrest the ram, either under the control of the operator, or because of accident.
A further characteristic of the invention is a particular form of support for the trunnions of the guard plate, by means of which the attachment of the guard, and its adjustment in relation to the bolster is facilitated.
' The invention consists primarily in a safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space between the punch and the operator, and actuating means therefor comprising a main actuating lever having three diverging arms, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the power shaft of a press, and a cam levercooperating therewith, and connections between one arm of said main actuating lever and said cam lever; between another arm of said main actuating lever, and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press, and between the remaining arm of said main actuating lever and said guard plate; and in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as are hereinafter set forth and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the accompanying drawings, I have shown at a an ordinary punch press, having a ram 6 actuated from the power shaft controllable-by a clutch mechanism (Z. The tr p mechanism for said clutch mechanism includes'therein a pedal 6. The bed of the Z) and carrying a guard plate 9 normally extending across and below the feeding space between the punch or ram and the operator. One end of the shaft 9 is provided with a crank arm 9* by means of which said plate receives a timely movement to force the hand or hands of the operator from beneath the punch or ram.
Each end. of the shaft 9 serves as a trunnion for the plate and is mounted in a screw fitting adjustably mounted in a screw threaded socket in a fitting g having a plate adapted to be screwed Or bolted to the side of the bed f. By' using fittings g, I avoid the necessity for drilling and tapping the bed and very much simplify the mounting of the guard plate.
The guard plate 9 is adapted to be nor mally manually actuated simultaneously with, and by the same mechanism used for the tripping of the clutch mechanism (Z, supplemental automatically operative means being provided whereby the plate will be actuated from the power shaft 0 in the event of the clutch mechanism becoming inoperative to arrest rotary movement of said shaft, Power for actuating the plate is transmitted through a single main actuating lever whether it be derived from the manually actuated mechanism, or through the automatically operative mechanism. This main actuating lever has three diverging arms ]2,.Z" and j one of which as 71 preferably projects downwarlly at substantially-right angles to the other two. Each of said arms has a forked end.
The arm 2' carries a pivotal block '2' in which the screw threaded end of a link 2' is fitted, the other end of said link being pivotally connected with the crank arm 9. The arm it also carries a similar swivel, upon whichone end of the clutch link 7t is mounted, and through which the pedal link 712 passes, said link being secured in any adjusted position by a set screw, or in any other desired manner.
The arm 3' has pivotally connected there with a link j, the other end of which is pivotally connected with a cam lever I: mounted in a bracket secured adjacent the top of the press fran1e, and cooperating with a cam 10 carried by the end of the shaft 0, preferably adjacent the fly wheel.
By the foregoing construction, the main actuating lever may be similarly rocked by means of either the connections between it and the lever is and cam 76 constituting the emergency actuating mechanism, or between it and the foot pedal.

The projections m and 0 and m and 0 are arranged oppositely to each other, being normally forced into engagement by the springs pp while being permitted to separate when power is applied to the arm through the link j. Preferably the contacting surfaces of opposite projections, extend on planes slightly oblique to the axis of the hubs Z and a so as to insure the various projections being restored to substantially the same position after each actuation through the link j while permitting any needed slight play during such actuation.

To prevent the manual movement of the plate imparting sufficient movement to the arm h to trip the clutch (Z, or to reverse the plate 9 so as to make it inoperative; andto relleve the springs pp from excessive extent; and will not transmit movement to i the arm h. The operation of the herein described Tafety appliance is substantially as folows:-

The plate 1 and link 8, or either or both of them, limit the oscillatory movement of the arm 2' acting as a positive stop when the plate 5/ has been raised to the desired'extent to remove the hand of the operator from beneath the ram 1). Hence, if the operator attempts to turn the plate 9 soas to disengage the lever 70 from the cam 74, and have the plate project from the shaft 9 toward 7 him, thus making the appliance inoperative, the limit stop mechanism above referred to will prevent such a movement of the plate.

A safety appliance forhand fed power presses embodying therein an oscillatory guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space between the ram and the operator and actuating means therefor comprising a main actuating lever having three diverging arms, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the power shaft of a press, and a cam lever coijperating therewith, and connections between one arm of said main actuating lever and said cam lever, between another arm of said main actuating lever and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press and between the remaining arm of said main actuating lever and said guard plate whereby said plate will be moved upwardly and toward the operator with each actuation of said main actuating mechanism.
A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space between the ram and the operator, and actuating means therefor, comprising a main actuating lever having three diverging arms, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the power shaft of a press, and a cam lever co operating therewith, and connections between one arm of said main actuating lever and said cam lever, between another arm of said main actuating lever and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press, and between the remaining arm of said main actuating lever and said guard plate, the arm connected with saidlever' and the arm connected with said guard plate being operatively connected, and movable independently of, or simultaneously with, said arm connected with the clutch tripping mechanism, whereby said guard plate may be actuated by said cam lever without imparting movement to, and the manual movement of said plate cannot actuate, said clutch tripping mechanism.

A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space bet-ween the ram and the operator, and actuating means therefor comprising a main actuating lever havingthree diverging arms, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the powershaft of a press, and a cam lever cooperating therewith, and connections. between one arm of said main actuating lever and said cam lever, between another arm of said main actuating lever and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press, and between the remaining arm of said main actuating lever and said guard plate, the arm connected with said lever and the arm connected with said guard plate being operatively connectedyand movable independently of, or simultaneously with, said arm connected with the clutch tripping mechanism, whereby said guard plate may be actuated by said normally extending across and below the feeding space between the ram and the operator, and actuating means therefor com prising a main actuating mechanism consisting of a bearing having mounted thereon two hubs, one of said hubs having thereon a projection and angularly extending arms, and the other of said hubs having thereon a projection oppositely disposed to the proj ection on said first named hub, and a single arm, a spring mechanism whereby said projections are normally held in engagement, but are permitted to separate, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the power shaft of a press, and a cam lever coiiperating therewith, connections between one of the arms on said first named hub and said guard plate, and the other arm on said hub and said cam lever, and connections between the arm on said other hub and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press.
6. A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space between the ram and the operator, and
actuating means therefor comprising a main anism whereby said projections are normally held in engagement, but are permitted to separate, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the power shaft of a press, a cam lever cotiperating therewith, connections between one of the arms on said first named hub and said guard plate, and the other arm on said hub and said cam lever, and connections between the arm on said other hub and the clutch tripping mechanismof a press, and a stop mechanism whereby movement of said first named hub and the arms carried thereby with relation to said other hub and the arm carried thereby is limited to that necessary to actuate said guard plate. 7 I

A safety appliance'for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space between the ram and the op erator, and actuating means therefor comprising a main actuating mechanism consisting of a bearing having mounted thereon two hubs, one of said hubs having thereon a plurality of substantially diametrically op positely disposed projections and angularly extending arms and the other of said hubs having thereon a plurality of substantially diametrically oppositely disposed projections oppositely disposed to the projections on said first named hub respectively and adapted to operatively engage same, and a single arm, a spring acting upon each projection upon each hub and upon the projection upon the other hub cooperating therewith whereby said projections are normally held in engagement with each other but are permitted to separate, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the power shaft of a press, and a cam lever cooperating therewith, connections between one of the arms on said first named hub and said guard plate, and the other arm on said hub and said cam lever, and connections between the arm on said other hub and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press.

A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space between the ram and the operator, and actuating means therefor comprising a main actuating mechanism consisting of a bearing having mounted thereon two hubs, one of said hubs having thereon a plurality of substantially diametrically oppositely disposed projections and angularly extending arms and the other of said hubs having thereon a plurality of substantially diametrically oppositely disposed projections oppositely disposed to the projections on said first named hub respectively and adapted to operatively engage same, and a single arm, a spring acting upon each projection upon each hub and upon the pro ection upon the other hub cooperating therewith whereby said projections are normally held in engagement with each other but are permitted to separate, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the power shaft of a press, and a cam lever cooperating therewith, connections between one of the arms on said first named hub and Said guard plate, and the other arm on said hub and said cam lever, connections between the arm on said other hub and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press, and a slotted link pivotally connected with one ofthe projections upon eachhub whereby the extent feeding space between the ram and the operator, and actuating means therefor comprising a main actuating mechanism consisting of a bearing having mounted thereon two hubs, one of said hubs having thereon a projection and angularly extending arms, and the other of said hubs having thereon a projection oppositely disposed to the projection on said first named hub, and a single arm, a spring mechanism whereby said projections are normally held in engagement, but are permitted to separate, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the. power shaft of a press, and a cam lever cooperating therewith, connections between one of the arms on said first named hub and said guard plate, and the other arm on said hub and said cam lever, connections between the arm on said other hub and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press, and a slotted link pivotally connected with the frame of a press and with said cam lever whereby the movement of said guard plate is limited.

A safety appliance for hand fed power presses embodying therein a guard plate normally extending across and below the feeding space between the ram and the operator, and actuating means therefor comprising a main actuating mechanism consisting of a bearing having mounted thereon two hubs, one of said hubs having thereon a plurality of substantially diametrically oppositely disposed projections and angularly extending arms and the other of said hubs having thereon a plurality of substantially diametrically oppositely disposed projections oppositely disposed to the projections on said first named hub respectively and adapted to operatively engage same, and a single arm, a spring acting upon each projection upon each hub and upon the projection upon the other hub cooperating therewith whereby said projections are normally held in engagement with each other but are permitted to separate, an emergency actuating mechanism consisting of a cam carried by the power shaft of a press, and a cam lever cooperating therewith, connections between one of the arms on said first named hub and said guard plate, and the other arm on said hub and said cam lever, connections between the arm on said other hub and the clutch tripping mechanism of a press, a slotted link pivotally connected with one of the projections upon each hub whereby the my signature in the presence of two subextent of separation of said projections is scribing witnesses, this 28th day of August, 11 limited, and a slotted link pivotally connect- 1916.
