This invention relates to starting and stopping mechanisms for presses and particularly to such mechanism for contiolling presses of the type sometimes called .revolution presses, the term revolution press being indicative of the fact that in presses of this type the pressing operation is per? formed and the parts restored to their inoperative positions during a single revolution of the driving shaft, a ily Wheel upon said shaft taking the place of the usual train otl gears to reduce the power requirements of the machine.l
The press to which the term revolution press is applied is of the beam or crossliead type and is commonly used with cutting-out dies for cutting sheet material, especially the thicker sheet materials, or when it is desired tocut several thicknesses at one operation. Presses of this type,'as usually constructed up to the present time, have been provided with means for bringing them to rest at the end of a complete revolution of the main shaft, provided the actuating mechanism he released by the operator in due season. lf, however, in presses of this type las hitherto constructed, the operator failed to release the actuating mechanism quickly enough, a second pressing operation would be performed, sometimes lwith disastrous results tothe worker injury to the operator. With the foregoing and other objects in view, the inventio is herein shown as embodied in a press of the particular type above specified, the illustrated embodiment comprising means for unclutching the press from the source of power at the completion of the pressing operation independently of the operation of the treadle, or other manu- `ally controlled element of the actuating means, and, Ain addition, means for interposing a stop or abutment in the path of movement, of a coperating stop provided on 'a moving part of the machine whereby the latter will be stopped .substantially positively in the event that the brake fails to bring the said part to rest before the two stopP members come into engagement with eachother.
A particular feature of the invention is the provision of an abutment or stop, arranged to cooperate with a stop on a moving part of the machine, which is so connected with the brake mechanism that upon the stop being brought into engagement with the abutment the action of the brake member upon the brake surface will be amplified. Moreover, vthe abutment is preferably connected with the clutch mechanism in such manner that, should the stop be brought against the abutment with any consid rable force, the clutch mechanism will beheld from operation by the treadle orpther manually lcontrolled member of the actuating meansuntil the driving shaftlias been turned slightly in a direction o posite to that which effects the operation o the press. This arrangement provides a "tell-tale which will thus indicate that the brake is not properly adjusted, or that the brake surface is worn o such an extent as to require readjustment of the brake band.

As the pendent link 56 is pulled down through its .connection with the treadle, as already described, the tappet screw 72 will bear against the face of the link and by the time the clutch lever Q2 has moved far enough to put the clutch into operation the pendent link 56 will be pushed by the screw to an extent suilicient to disengage the projection 62 from the tooth 64 on the clutch trip lever 66, whereupon the spring 58 connected with the pendent link willraise the same and straighten the toggle 4Q, 44 as soon as the distance apart of the ends of the platen controlled lever 46 and the clutch lever permits the said toggle to be straightened.
To insure that the ydriving pulley Q0 is retained in engagement with the coned clutch member 18 throughout a complete oper ation of the press and to prevent the premature unclutching of the pulley Q0 from the shaft. l'by the straightening of theL toggle 42, 44 when the pendent link :'16 is released, a positive locking device is pro-- vided to hold the laterally movable rod 36 in the position into which it is moved by its spring when starting the press. Conveniently the lock consists of a cam surface 7 4 forming par-t of the bracket 54 hereinbefore referred to as bolted upon one of the rising and falling rods 10 of the platen. The cam surface 74 engages a roller 76 or the like on the laterally movable rod 36 and is :fo shaped that while the said rod is held from movement during the depression of the plat; i it will be left free to move when the .raten reaches its uppermost position,
The brake mechanism is coupled with the clutch mechanism through the laterally movable rod 36 which preferably extends across the machine from side to side. T he said rod is connected at its left-hand end, see Fig. l, with the vertical arm of a bell crank lever 78 centered upon a bracket 80 drum.

The horizon- 'tal arm of the bell-crank lever 78 is coupled by a link 82 with the outer end of a rocker frame 84 pivotally mounted at 86 upon the frame of the machine or on the bracket aforesaid. Pivotally connected to the rocker frame, also at its outer end, is one end of a band brake 88 that partially surrounds a brake drum 9() secured on the shaft 16. The other or stationary end of the brake is adjustabl carried by an upstanding lever 92 pivoted at 94 upon the machine frame. It ,will be seen from the foregoing description that when. the laterally movable rod 36 is propelled by its spring in the direction that moves the driving pulley Q0 into engagement with the coned member 18 the bell-crank lever will be turned on its center so as to lower its horizontal arm and thereby swing the rocker frame 84 downward on its pivot whereby the brake band 88 will be slackened on the brake drum 90.
'Io prevent the driving shaft from overrunning should the band brake` 88 fail to exercise suiiicient braking action, a stop 96 is provided on the brake drum, which stop is so located on the drum as to come into contact with or into close proximity to an abutment 98 at the time the press is stopped, the said abutment being removed automatically from the path of the stop 96 when the machine is in operation. The abutment 98, according to this embodiment, is constituted by a pendent arm that is pivoted at 100 upon the outer end of the rocker frame 84 and hangs downward when the brake is applied in such position that its free end will be in the path of the stop 96 on the brake To remove the end of the pendent arm 98 from such position when the brake is slackened and'the machine is started, the said arm is provided with a cam piece 102 which, as the arm is lowered, engages an adjustable stud 104 on the machine frame and is thereby deflected out of the path of the stop 9G on the drum preferably in opposition to a spring 106 which connects the pendent. arm with the frame and tends to maintain the said arm in the position in which it will engage the stop. The arrangement that the abutment 9S attached to the rocker frame 84. to which also the end of the brain` band is attached, provides means such that should the band brake fail to stop lthe press and the stop 96 on the brake drum should be brought forcibly against the pendent arm 99, the latter will be moved upward and the rocker frame 84 so turned as to amplify the pressure already applied to the band brake. Moreover, when the .pendent arm 98 is forced upward bevoiid a predetermined amount by the stop 96 on the brake drum.the clutch mechanisin cannot be operated, even if the treadle be actuated, and the tOggle 42, 44, hereiniso wmmanmwwmawiwnmum,
before described, cannot be broken by reason of the fact that the laterally movable rod 36 will not be free to move under the influence of the spring 40 which normally tends to move it and the clutch lever 22 to clutch the driving pulley 20 to the coned member 18.
lTo start the press into operation after it has been thus stopped it is necessary that the driving shaft 16 shall be revolved slightly in a direction opposite to that in which the press is operate in order to free the pendent arm 98 from the stop 96 on the brake drum, and thus a tell-tale is' provided to show that the brake is not properly adjusted or that the brake surface is worn to such an extent as to require the adjustment of the brake band. l
The operation of the press, briefly reeapitulated, is as follows: Assuming vthe platen 8 to be raisedand the driving Apulley 20 to be out of contact with the cone member 18 on the driving shaft 16, the work and dies are positioned on the block 6. The operator then depresses the treadle 7 O which, through the clutch trip lever 66, tooth 64 and projections 62, pulls down the pendent link 56 and breaks the toggle 42, 44. This permits the spring 4() to move the laterally movable rod 36 which at one side of the machine' turns the clutch lever 22 to cause the loose pulley 20 to engage the cone member 18 and at the other side of the machine lowers the rocker frame 84, thereby slackening the brake band on the brake drum 90 and at the same time removing the pendent arm 98 from the path of the stop 9G on the brake drum. The engagement of the tappet screw 72 with the pendent link 56 as the latter is pulled .down by the treadle causes the projection 62 to be moved out of engagement with the tooth 64 as the clutch lever 22 moves in' a connter-cloclnvise direction in Fig. 1, sg that the toggle is permitted to reassnme its straightened position irrespective of the action of the treadlc as soon as the movement of the platen controlled lever 46 leaves space enough betweenl the said lever 46 and the clutch lever 22 for the straightening of the toggle. The pin and slot connection between the toggle and the platen controlled lever provides lost motion for the latter after the toggle has been straightened.
During the greater part of the movement of the platen 8, the laterally movable rod 36 is locked from movement by the cam surface 74 on the platen rod engaging the roller 7 6 on said laterally movable rod. During the continued rotation of the driving shaft and after the cutting operation has been effected, the raising of the platen will turn the platen controlled lever 46 until the lost motion of the toggle therewith has been taken up, whereupon, the cam 74 being removed from the roller 76 on the laterally movable rod 36,
- the straightened toggle 42, 44 will thrust the top* of the clutch lever 22 outward and so disconnect the loose pulley 2O from the cone lmember 18 tostop the machine. At the same time the laterally movable rod 36 will be pulled toward the right by its connections with the clutch lever 22, and, through the' Abell crank 7 8 and the rocker frame 84 with which it is connected, it Will cause the brake band 884to be drawn against the drum and at the same time will position the end of the varm 98 in the path of the stop 96 on the brake drum so as to insure stopping of the machine if the said parts come into contact.
Having described our invention, what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. In a machine of the class described, driven mechanism, driving means, and starting and stopping mechanism compris` ing, in combination, a clutch through which connections may be effected between said driven mechanism and said driving means, means, comprising a brake, for p eventing more than one operation of the machine for a single actuation, and means for preventing overthrow of the machine, said lastmentlioned preventing means being rendered operative by the action of said first-mentioned preventing means and being arranged to operate only aiter said first-mentioned preventing means has operated.
2. In a machine of the class described, driven mechanism. driving means, and starting and stopping mechanism comprising, in combination. a clutch throln li which connections may be effected between said driven mechanism and said driving means, means connected with -the driven mechanism for maintaining said clutch operative until the machine has substantially conlplcted an operation, means, comprising a brake. for preventing more than one operation of the machine for a single actuation, and means for preventing overthrow of the machine. said last mentioned preventing means being rendered operative by the action of said first mentioned preventing means and being arranged to operate only after said first-mentioned preventing means has operated.
3. In a machine of the class described, starting and stopping mechanism comprising a clutch through which connections may be effected with a source of power, a brake, means for disconnecting said clutch and applying said brake, and means, arranged to operate only in case of overthrow of the machine, for increasing the braking action of saidgbrake.
4. I n a machine of the class described. driven mechanism, driving means,v and starting and stopping mechanism comprising, in combination, a clutch through which connections may be effected between said driving mechanism and said driving means, a brake, means connected to said driven mechanism for disconnecting said clutch and applying said brake at the end of a complete operation ot' said mechanism, and means also connected to saidr mechanism and operated therefrom to increase the braking action of said brake in the event of a tendency of said mechanism to pass its normal position of rest.
5. In a machine of the class described, driven mechanism, driving means, and starting and stopping mechanism comprising, in combination, a clutch through which connections may be effected between said driven mechanism and said driving means, a brake, automatic means for disconnecting said clutch after a single operation ofthe machine and applying said brake, and means connected with said brake and controlled by said driven mechanism for increasing the braking action of said brake in the event of a tendency of said driven mechanism to pass its normal position of rest.
(i. In a machine of the class described, a rotatable member, a brake arranged to act upon said member, a stop carried by said member, a second stop connected to said brake and arranged to be interposed in the path of movement of said first stop when said brake is applied, said connections being arranged to increase they braking action of said brake if said stops contact.
7. In a machine of the class described, the combination, with a rotatable driven member, a` rotating driving member, means for effecting an operative connection be tween said members, a stop carried by said driven member, and a. brake arranged to act upon said driven member, of means for interrupting the connection between said members, applying said brake to said member, and interposing a stop in the path of movement of the stop on said driven member, and connections between said brake and said interposed stop whereby the braking action of said brake is increased when said stops contact.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination with driven mechanism and driving means, of a clutch through which connection may be effected between said mechanism and said means, a brake for stopping said mechanism when said clutch is disconnected, means actin f automatically to disconnect said clutch and to apply said brake to stop said mechanism after a single operation, a stop arranged to be moved into position to prevent overthrow of said mechanism beyond its position. of rest, and connections between said mechanism and said stop for moving said stop into operative position.
9. In a machine of the class described,
-reciprocating parts,
the combination with relatively reciprocating parts and mea-ns for operating said parte including a clutch through which connections may be elfected with a source of power, of, a brake, means acting automatically to disconnect said clutch and to apply said, brake after a single reciprocation of said means for automatically introducin a stop into the path of movement of said operating means to pref vent a relative movement of said reciprocating parts beyond their relative positions of rest, and connections between said stop and said brake whereby the braking action of said brake is increased in the event of a tendency of said machine to overthrow.
10. In a machine of the class described, a reciprocating member and mechanism for effecting the reciprocation of said member, including a clutch through which connections may be effected with a source of power, means for automatically disconnecting said clutch and applying a brakeafter a single operation of said member, mean or antomatically interposing a stop in the path of movement of an element of said mechanism to prevent a movement of said member beyond its position of rest, and connections between said stop and said brake whereby the braking action of said brake is increased in the event of a tendency of said member to pass its position of rest.
ll. In a machine of thc class described, a reciprocating member, and means for mov ing said member toward and away from the 100 work, including a clutch through which con not-tions may be made with a source of power, in combination with clutch controlling mcchanism operated from said member, brake mechanism, connections between the 16s clutch controlling mechanism and the brake mechanism fwhereby the brake is applied when the clutch is disconnected, and means for reventing overthrow of the parts cornprising a stop arranged to be brought into 110 operative position as the clutch is discolr nectcd, said stop being so connected to said brake mechanism that if its stopping function be called into play it will increase the action of said brake mechanism.
12. In a machine of the class described, the combination with driven mechanism, driving means, a. clutch through which connections may be eected between said mech anism and said means, and a brake for stopping said mechanism when said connections are interrupted, of means operating in the event of overthrow of said mechanism to increase the braking action of said brake, and a? single actuating means constructed to render said clutch operativeand simultaneously to render said brake and said overthrow preventing means inoperative.
13. In a machine of the class described, the combination with driven mechanism, 15o

In :i machine of the class described, the combination with :i driven mechanism, comprieing a reciprocating member, driving means, a clutch through which connections muy be eii'ected between said mechanism and Said means, and a brake for stopping eaid mechanism when said connections are .interrupted, of means connected to and operated by said reciprocating member for maintaining said clutch positively in operative condition throughout substantially the whole of the riciprocating movement of Said niember, und for moving said clutch positively into inoperative condition and for positively applying said brake as the reciprocating movement of said member is completing, und menne, also rendered operative through connection with said reciprocating member, for increasing the braking action of said brake it said member passes its position of rest.
