Abstract

1,034,239. Engine oil sumps. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Oct. 12, 1964 [Oct. 12, 1963], No. 41576/64. Heading F1B. An oil sump is divided by baffles 12, 13, into at least three chambers A, B, C, with interconnecting ducts 17, 22, which equalise the levels in the chamber when the engine is horizontal but which ensure that a substantial amount of oil remains in each chamber when the engine is tilted. The main lubricating oil pump 16 draws from chamber A and a secondary pump 38 transfers oil from chamber C to chamber A. The pipe 22, which has openings 23, 24, into chambers B, C, may be extended to form a drain passage, having a drain plug 26 which closes opening 25 into chamber A until the plug is screwed inwardly to open the drain outlet. The baffle 12 carries plates 20, 21, extending partially over chambers A, B.
