Abstract

1,033,612. Valves. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 2, 1963 [Feb. 13, 1962], No. 5445/62. Heading F2V. In a thermally actuated gas safety valve one end of a helical tension spring defines the gas passage and the other end is closed, the spring being normally retained by a fusible element in an extended position to permit the passage of gas between the extended convolutions. Spring 6, having coils of circular, square, concavo-convex, or interlocking " V " or " Z " section, is attached at one end to a port 1 and has a closing element 7 engaged with the other end to which is attached a bow 8 forming a retaining element holding the spring 6 in the open position by soldered attachments 9, of fusible material, to the body 4 of the valve. Alternatively (Fig. 5, not shown) the closing element may be connected by a screw, adjustably retained in the closing element, to a perforated disc or spider 31 of fusible material. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3) the spring 6 is maintained open by a fusible pin 12 adjustably screwed through an apertured disc 14 or (Fig. 6, not shown) a non-fusible pin may be adjustably screwed through the closing element to bear on a fusible spider at the open end of the spring. The valve body 4 is preferably of copper or aluminium and the spring 6 of heat-resisting steel, quartz, or of metal coated with quartz.
