[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for serving and winding strands on an elongated member includes means for reciprocating the member, winding means, and means for maintaining tension in the member. A carrier wire 11 extending from a reel 18, connected to a torque motor 26 to apply constant tension to the wire, passes through a bore 36 in a rotated hollow shaft 19, carrying a suitably braked bobbin 61 and a serving head 20, and through a bore 41 in a guide finger 21 on the head 20 to be secured to clamp 44 on a block 42. In operation a cam 52 reciprocates a bar 43 on which the block 42 is mounted and wire 13 or thread to be wound on the carrier wire 11 passes through a slot 63 in the rotating head 20 and through a guide slot 27, formed in the finger 21 perpendicular to the core wire 11, to form a coil layer 12, on the wire 11. As the carrier wire 11 reciprocates the layers 12 build up to form a coil 14. When one coil is completed the apparatus is stopped and the clamp block 42 is moved along the bar 43 to a new position in which it is held by a pin 47. A loop 16 of strand wire or thread 13 extending rearwardly from the completed coil is passed through notches 69 in a hook 28 on the bar 43 to hold the loop 16 during winding. Winding of the next coil is then commenced. Solenoid coils may be so wound.
