Abstract
A melt or an aqueous solution or slurry of at least one metal chloride, sulphate or nitrate is injected, as by spraying, into the upper part of a reactor, thermally decomposing at least some of the metal salt by means of hot gas while the sprayed liquid falls countercurrently to it in the presence of water vapour in the case of the chloride, collecting the solid decomposition products into a fluidized bed in the lower part of the reactor so as to decompose residual metal salt at elevated temperature, again in the presence of water vapour in the case of the chloride, and withdrawing fluidizing gases and gaseous decomposition products from the reactor. Specified salts include the chlorides of magnesium, iron, aluminium, calcium, zinc and manganese, the sulphates of magnesium, iron and aluminium and the nitrates of calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. The process is particularly applicable to the recovery of chlorides from the liquor derived from the HCl activation of clays such as bentonites, subbentonites and calcium montmorillonite, the HCl produced in the reactor being recovered and re-used. The hot gases for the decomposition may be introduced through a tangential inlet near the lower end of the upper part of the reactor, or wholly or partly through the fluidized bed.
