Abstract

1309744 Metal oxides from chloride hydrates WOODALL-DUCKHAM Ltd 30 June 1970 [31 March 1969] 16781/69 Heading C1A A metal oxide and HCl are produced by decomposing particles of a metal chloride hydrate, separating the oxide from the HCl-containing gases, absorbing the HCl in an HCl solution to give a superazeotropic solution, distilling this solution to recover dry gaseous HC1, and recycling the remaining solution to the absorption stage. The chloride hydrate may be obtained by spray-drying a chloride solution, such that a lower hydrate is formed. The absorption may be carried out at atmospheric pressure in a cooled absorber to which gases and acid are fed at 100‹ C., to give a solution at 30‹ C. containing 36% HCl. The gases may initially be quenched to 100‹ C. by scrubbing with HCl. A further absorption stage may be provided using cold 15% HCl which is recirculated through a heat exchanger with make-up water. The distillation may be effected at atmospheric pressure to give an azeotropic solution (21% HCl) which may be heat exchanged with the 36% soln. Acid may be bled off from both absorption circuits, mixed with some product MgO, and fed to the spray drier. The metal may be Mg, Fe<SP>2+</SP>, Fe<SP>3+</SP>, Al, Ni, Co or Mn.
