Abstract

1,031,940. Determination of gas content of metals. BALZERS PATENTUND LIZENZANSTALT. Oct. 15, 1964[Oct. 25,1963], No. 42066/ 64. Heading B1X. The gas content of metal samples is determined by melting the sample in vacuo in a crucible and analyzing the gases thus liberated, the remnants of the sample after the de-gassing being removed from the crucible by rotating the crucible about a vertical axis at such a speed that the remnants of the sample are thrown out. Apparatus comprises an evacuated casing, a heatable crucible arranged therein, a gas collection pump in communication with the casing and a gas analyzing instrument connected with the pump, the crucible being journalled rotatably about a vertical axis and driving means being provided to rotate the crucible. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, in furnace casing 21 crucible 22 is carried on liquid-cooled shaft 24 and has trough 23 for the samples fed in at 55. Shaft 24 is carried by ball-bearings 37, 38 and is cooled by cooling medium entering at 25 into chamber 30,flowing through apertures 31 into the interior of shaft 24, downward in tube 32, through apertures 33 and 34 into chamber 36, and out at 26. Heating element 47 is a cylindrical shell-shaped graphite or carbon body. The upper parts of the furnace may be cooled by cooling medium flowing from 51 through 53 to 52. Vacuum is applied at 54. .
