Abstract

<PICT:1031047/C1/1> Cyanuric acid is made by a process comprising subjecting urea at a temperature of 170 DEG C. or below to a thermal treatment at temperatures between 220 DEG and 340 DEG C. to obtain raw cyanuric acid, and treating the raw acid by acid hydrolysis under pressure to hydrolyse amino derivatives formed during the thermal treatment. The ammonia evolved is recovered by absorption in the mother liquor from the acid hydrolysis and vaporized unreacted urea is recycled. In the embodiment described in relation to the drawing, urea is heated in vessel 1, fed into malaxators 3, then into (optional) finishing screw 10, the inner walls of the malaxators and the finishing screw being maintained at between 220 DEG and 340 DEG C. The raw cyanuric acid is poured into cooled screw exchanger 14, then fed to grinder 15, into aqueous acid in tank 18, into autoclave 24 for the hydrolysis step, and to filtering device 31 for separation of the pure cyanuric acid. The mother liquors pass to saturator 35 to absorb ammonia from the thermal treatment zones, then may be neutralized with more ammonia to recover the ammonium salt of the acid, for example nitric or phosphoric acid used in the hydrolysis step.
