Abstract

Melamine is produced by a cyclic process in which dicyandiamide, cyanamide, or a mixture thereof in solution in liquid ammonia is heated for 10 to 60 minutes at 110 to 160 DEG C. under sufficient pressure to maintain the liquid phase and prevent substantial vaporization of ammonia, whereupon the reaction mixture is cooled, the precipitated melamine is removed and the mother liquor is recycled with or without additional quantities of dicyandiamide and liquid ammonia. The dicyandiamide is preferably dissolved in the liquid ammonia at about 20-70 DEG C. and may comprise 25-70 per cent of the whole. In order to reduce the amount of deamination products formed in the reaction, not more than about one half of the dicyandiamine is converted to melamine during the reaction period. The relatively insoluble melamine is filtered from the cooled reactants which contain the more soluble dicyandiamide and intermediate products in solution. The process may be carried out in the apparatus of Specification 598,532.
