Abstract
Crude melamines produced by heating an aquo-ammono carbonic acid and containing genetic impurities which include hydroxy-triazines is purified by stripping off carbon dioxide from said crude melamine and then digesting said melamine under super-atmospheric pressure in 8 to 28% by weight aqueous ammonia at temperatures of 140 to 230 DEG C. and crystallizing the melamine therefrom, the carbon dioxide content of the aqueous ammonia/melamine not being allowed to rise above 3% by weight. The carbon dioxide may be stripped from the crude melamine by means of steam. Suitable aquo-ammono carbon acids are urea, biuret, cyanuric acid, ammelide and ammeline. The mother liquor remaining after crystallization of the melamine therefrom is preferably distilled to recover ammonia, cooled to crystallize ammelide and ammeline therefrom for use as aquo-ammono carbonic acid starting material, and then used to quench a hot melamine effluent foamed melamine synthesis prior to treatment as above.
