Abstract

In well-drilling apparatus comprising a structure 1, 3, 7, a drawworks 11 mounted on top of the structure, and a mast 29 having legs 37 extending upwardly from the structure and legs 36 extending downwardly adjacent the structure, the mast is pivotally mounted at 28 to facilitate erection. The structure is raised from the position shown in Fig. 1 by connecting a sling 40 to extend from the travelling block 31, around a pulley 43 on the member 7 to a position 41 on the mast, and by running the drawworks to haul in the fast line 33. The structure is held in its raised position by strut 52, pins 45 and stops 44. The mast is raised by running the drawworks to haul in more of the fast line, the mast being held in the upright position by pins inserted at 57. The rotary table 16 is supported on the end of the member 7 beneath the mast and the member is surrounded by a floor 58 in the mast. In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown), the sub-structure is raised by a jack, the rotary table is carried directly by the floor 66 in the mast and the legs 37 may extend to the base 1. In the further modification shown in Fig. 10 the structure comprises a box framework 71 and a portal formed by two L-shaped frames 72 which pivot about axes 73. The rotary table 92 is directly supported by the floor 88 in the mast and an engine 77 for the drawworks is mounted on a foundation 78. The structure may be built up from assemblies piled on top of one another.
