A device for an adjustable bed or chair comprises a bearing surface having an outer frame 3 the inclination of which is adjustable relatively to the framework 1 of a bed or chair. The spine of the user is supported by a loin rest comprising a shaft 9, Fig. 2 (not shown), having eccentrics 8 which bear against lamellae 5. Shaft 9 is rotatable into a desired adjusted position in slides 10 to alter the shape of the loin rest. Slides 10 are adjustable relatively to frame 3 by means of links 11, 14. Link 11 has a displaceable fulcrum 12 and the fulcrum between link 14 and an arm 15 fixed to frame 3 is also displaceable. Alternatively arm 15 may be link connected with slide 10 through a toggle joint connection the break point of which is guided in a curved guideway on framework 1. As the inclination of frame 3 is increased slides 10 move in an upward direction and vice-versa.
