Abstract

1,030,532. Gear-cutting. CHURCHILL GEAR MACHINES Ltd. March 3, 1965 [Feb. 7, 1964], No. 5222/64. Heading B3K. A gear hobbing machine for spur gears or worm wheels comprises an hydraulic pump which can either supply a motor 22 driving the hob and the work or a motor 33 for a rapid return of the hob-slide, and a pump to supply a third motor 40 for a slow feed of the slide. The pumps are driven by a common electric motor. The cutter head 105 can be fed to a depth gauged by a stop 107, which acts jointly with a switch 108 on the head engaging a dog in the bed. A further dog 111 actuates a switch 110 before full depth is reached and a dog 113 actuates a switch 112 when the head is moved away. The manually controlled variable-speed motor 22 drives the hob through gears 133, 137, 143 and 145 and the work through differential gear 147, gears 150, index change gears 155 and worm gearing 161. The reversible motor 33 drives a screw 116 through a shaft 162, worm gearing 163, a sleeve 165, a dog-clutch 166 and a spindle 167. A tangential-feed screw 123 is rotated from the sleeve 165 by gears 168, 169, 170, a dog clutch 171, worm gearing 173, a sleeve 175 and gears 176. For hobbing helical gears, the rotation of the work is modified by a drive from the shaft 162 through bevel gears 179, change gears 182 and the differential 147. The reversible motor 40 drives the shaft 162 through an electromagnetic clutch 189 for upward or downward feed of the hob-slide at a speed set by a hand valve. The pump supplying the motor 40 also supplies pistons for feeding the head 105 and for setting a hob shift device 130 before each new cycle. It also supplies a spring-loaded piston for clamping and unclamping the work and an axially-movable centre. When worm-wheels are to be cut, the clutch 166 is disengaged and the clutch 171 engaged. The hob-shift device 130 is disengaged and the hobslide moved tangentially of the workpiece. The tangential slide, however, may be omitted.
