Abstract

1464566 Gear hobbing machines CHARLES CHURCHILL Ltd 23 Oct 1975 [7 Nov 1974] 48215/74 Heading B3K In a gear hobbing machine in which the hob 13 and gear blank 16 are simultaneously rotated about their axes at right angles to each other whilst the hob is traversed past the gear blank to effect the cutting operation, means is provided to move the hob axially at predetermined intervals at the completion of each cutting traverse to distribute wear on the hob and hence increase its operative life. To achieve this, a reversible hydraulic motor 17 mounted on the machine frame 12 drives, by way of a worm and wheel 20, 21 with clutch means 23, 25 and gears 27, 28, a screw spindle 29 which engages a nut 30 attached [to the hob carriage 31. A cam 35 at the end of the motor shaft 18 cooperates with a proximity detector probe 36 which transmits pulses which are used in the control of the fluid flow to the motor, a subtrative counter 38 being provided for counting the pulses to operate means for stopping the motor when the counter reaches zero. The motor is only actuated to axially displace the hob when it is separated from the gear blank and prior to the hob being fed to the blank for a further cutting traverse. Electrical controls provide the control of the sequence of axial displacements of the hob in the machining cycle. After a full displacement of the hob a button 43 is operated to actuate the circuit to cause the motor 17 to reverse its direction and return the hob to its original axial position.
