Acoustic or other pressure mechanically applied to a semi-conductor junction of a transistor or tunnel diode forming part of an oscillator, frequency modulates it or mainly amplitude modulates it if applied at a transistor - emitter - base junction. A limited area of a P.N. junction, where it emerges at the surface of a semiconductor, may be pressed upon by the tip of a probe. The probe 4 may be mounted on a pivoted arm 6 with a screw 9 applying initial static pressure to the probe and P.N. junction, and with an acoustic diaphragm 5 connected to the probe to vary the pressure on a transistor collector/base or emitter/base junction, or the forwardly-biased junction of a tunnel diode. With a resonant circuit connected to the transistor or diode the oscillator of a low-power transmitter may be formed. Emitter/base pressure varies the transistor gain and amplitude modulates the oscillator. But collector/ base or diode junction pressure mainly varies internal capacity and frequency modulates it. The limited area subject to pressure may be insulated by an oxide coating.
