Abstract

1,030,356. Damping brake squeal. ADOLPH SAURER Ltd. Feb. 28, 1964 [May 7, 1963], No. 8347/64. Heading F2E. In order to damp brake squeal noises in drum brakes, a brake drum 1 is provided at its outer periphery with at least one cavity which extends around the outer periphery of the drum and is nearly filled with a loose, fine-grain non- caking particles of damping composition of high specific gravity, such as steel shot. The cavity may be in the form of a groove or grooves 2, 3 (Fig. 1) filled with steel shot 7 acting as a sound absorbing medium. The grooves 2, 3 are covered by means of a metal band 5 of which the ends are welded together. In the alternative embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the cavity may be in the form of a tube 20 filled with steel shot and arranged so as to fit tightly around the periphery of the brake drum when a tensioning device 22 has been tightened.
