Abstract

1,114,446. Pistons; disc and drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 6 July, 1966 [9 July, 1965], No. 29116/65. Headings F2E and F2T. A piston for disc or drum brakes comprises a cup-shaped core 10 and an outer shell 16 of a harder and more corrosion resistant material. The core may consist of aluminium, aluminium alloy, a thermosetting synthetic resin with or without a reinforcement, or a ceramic material and the shell may be made of stainless steel. The shell may be secured to the core by an adhesive or by cold-working (see Division B3). A disc brake, Fig. 5 (not shown), incorporates two such pistons (40) for operating a friction pad (22) and one piston (36) for operating the opposite friction pad (20). A drum brake, Fig. 6 (not shown), incorporates opposing pistons (54).
