Abstract

A pellet electrode for an electrolytic capacitor comprises a sintered mass of ceramic, e.g. alumina, alundum, magnesia, compounded aluminium/alumina, zirconia, titania, zirconium silicate, aluminium silicate, silicondioxide, which are coated with a valve metal e.g. tantalum, aluminium, niobium, mobium/tantalum alloy, by surface catalysed reduction of a vaporised compound of the metal, and filming or forming in conventional manner. A nickel tube (Fig. 1), not shown, filled with ceramic particles is heated by a jacket and is traversed by gas from a heated vaporiser containing tantalum chloride or bromide traversed by a current of hydrogen to deposit a pure tantalum layer on the particles by surface catalysis. The coated particles are sintered into a mass which may be etched or abraded, and are electrolytically anodised in phosphoric acid solution to form an oxide layer thereon. Reference has been direction by the Comptroller to Specification 936,174.
