Abstract

1355622 Electrolysis electrode; coating with metals &c. METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 4 Jan 1972 [8 Jan 1971] 322/72 Headings C7B and C7F [Also in Division B2] An electrode for use in the electrolysis of an alkali metal chloride comprises a graphite body which has a surface covering of a refractory ceramic material (e.g. of titanium carbide or titanium nitride) and of at least one platinum group metal and/or oxide of a platinum group metal, the covering being protected by an oxide coating (e.g. of silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, niobium pentoxide or tantalum pentoxide) which is electrically porous. In each of the Examples a graphite block is plasma arc sprayed with titanium nitride and thereafter coated as indicated below. Example 1, with a mixture of Ru and its oxide (by applying Ru Cl 3 - butanol solution and baking in air) and then with TiO 2 . Example 2, with Ru (from a gas phase diaromatic complex of Ru with benzene or hexamethyl benzene) and then with SiO 2 . Example 3, with mixed Pd and Ir oxides (from a Pd-Ir resinate solution) and then with Ta 2 O 5 . Example 4, with Ru oxide which is jointly plasma arc sprayed with the titanium nitride and then with zirconium oxide. In each Example, the last mentioned oxide is produced by applying a solution or mixture of the corresponding chloride with butanol (Examples 1 and 2) or alcohol (Examples 3 and 4) and subsequently heating.
