Abstract
1,029,987. Web coating apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Feb. 22,1963 [Feb. 23,1962], No. 7188/63. Heading D1L. A method of decreasing the thickness of a layer of liquid supported on a web comprises relatively moving the web and a flexible sheet in a manner such that one end of the sheet trails over the layer in face to face contact therewith, the length of sheet in contact with the layer and the speed of the relative motion being such that said end of the sheet converges towards the web under the action of the Bernoulli forces to a distance of separation from the web at the trailing edge of the sheet less than the original thickness of the layer. In the arrangement shown web 10, the undersurface of which is wet with liquid 12 is moved in the direction of the arrow a liquid removing squeezee member 11 mounted on bar 13. The physical forces acting upon the liquid, including Bernoulli forces, surface tension, capillarily, adhesion and cohesion co-operate to hold the squeezee member 11 in contact with the liquid 12 and to remove excess liquid. The squeezee member 11 is preferably resilient and may have further resilient members urging it into contact with the liquid. It may also be provided with a downwardly extending lip at its forward end, to prevent any further liquid subsequently applied to the web from running back and contaminating the liquid 12.
