Abstract

1,029,273. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 16, 1962], No. 6115/62. Heading H1D [Also in Division F2] A sample inlet system for a mass spectromoter comprises a reservoir, as shown two chambers 1, 2 joined together by a duct including a control valve 4, one or more inlet valves 5, a duct 3 including a control valve 8 loading through aperture 25 in oven 19 to an evacuating pump and a duct 3 leading through aperture 24 to the mass spectrometer and including a gas leak, all components making contact with the gas sample being made of glass or silicon carbide. The inlet valve 5 comprises a porous disc 17 of silicon carbide, covered with a liquid, e.g. liquid gallium. Liquid or gaseous samples may be introduced at 17 through a tube or a solid sample at the end of a rod. Each control valve 4 or 8 comprises a spherical seating surface at 31 and a glass plunger 33 including an iron slug 37 actuated by a cylindrical magnet 38 mounted on wires 39 from handle 40. The gas leak (not shown) to the mass spectrometer consists of a porous disc of silicon carbide.
