Abstract

1,029,054. Magnetic structures. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 24, 1964 [April 26, 1963], No. 16554/63. Heading H1H. Grooves, holes and the like are formed in ferrite material by spark erosion. The material is placed in a container 1 on an anvil 2 and covered with benzene to a level 5 above the edge of an erosion electrode 4 which is connected to the positive pole of a D.C. supply whose negative pole is connected to the anvil. For effective erosion the resistivity of the ferrite should be below 45 ohm/cm., preferably between 0À02 and 10 ohm/cm. Naturally suitable materials are Co Fe ferrites and some MnZn ferrites. For high resistivity ferrites (e.g. MnZn, MnMg, NiZn ferrites) the material is reduced by heating in reducing atmosphere between 500‹ C. and 1000‹ C. to convert ferric to ferrous iron and lower the resistivity. Erosion is then performed and the material re-oxidized.
