Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions contain as an extreme-pressure additive a carbomethoxyphenol polysulphide, such as the tri-, tetraor penta-sulphide, which has been obtained by reacting a carbomethoxyphenol with e.g. S3Cl2, S4Cl2 or S5Cl2. The oil is preferably a mineral oil. Other specified ingredients are:-chlorinated paraffin wax, dialkyl phosphites, di-(3-carbomethoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl) sulphide, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, di( - N - morpholinyl)-phenylmethane, calcium petroleum sulphonate, zinc di-n-butyl dithiocarbamate, a molybdate of 1,1-dimethyl-C18-22-aliphatic primary amines and a benzal derivative of similar C12-14 amines.ALSO:Tri-, tetra- and penta-sulphur dichlorides are prepared by dissolving sulphur in S2Cl2.ALSO:Carbomethoxyphenol polysulphides are prepared by reacting a carbomethoxyphenol with a S2Cl2/S reaction product, particularly tri-, tetraor penta-sulphur dichloride to obtain the corresponding tri-, tetra- or penta-sulphide.
