Abstract

Elastomeric members, such as natural and synthetic rubber, are protected from damage by contacting them with a lubricating oil containing a minor amount of an aryl di-[(C1-C8)n alkaryl] phosphate and/or a diaryl (C1-C8)n alkaryl phosphate, wherein n is 1 to 4. The preferred lubricant which is claimed per se is a blended oil comprising by wt. 60-80% mineral lubricating oil having a viscosity index of 85-140 and 40-20% of a mineral lubricating oil having a viscosity index of 20-40, and a minor amount of said phosphates. The preferred phosphate is diphenyl tolyl phosphate in amount 1-5% by wt. Optional ingredients include a basic polyvalent metal petroleum sulphonate, a sulphurized fatty oil, an oil-soluble polymer of an ester of an acrylic acid and a C4-C20 alkanol, a polyolefinic thickener, a dimethyl silicone polymer, and various anti-oxidants such as alkyl phenols, bis phenols and arylamines.
