Abstract

An extreme pressure lubricant composition comprises a major proportion of a refined mineral lubricating oil, a minor proportion of lead naphthenate and a minor proportion of a sulphur and nitrogen containing organic compound which is 2 - benzothiazyl N - N diethyl thio carbamyl sulphide, 2 - benzothiazyl N - N di - n-butyl thio carbamyl sulphide, oxypentamethylene thiocarbamyl diethyl thio carbamyl sulphide, bis - 4 - methyl benzothiazyl disulphide, benzothiozyl - n butyl disulphide or benzothiazyl - tert - butyl disulphide. The amount of lead naphthanate may be from 1 to 20 per cent, and the sulphur-nitrogen compound may be from 0.1 to 3.0 per cent and is preferably 0.25 to 0.5 per cent. Pour depressants and viscosity index improvers may also be added. Specification 734,412 is referred to.
