Abstract

1,028,697. Shearing. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 26, 1964 [May 28, 1963], No. 21276/63. Heading B3W. A shear comprises a pair of housings 29 between which upper and lower co-operating blade carrying drums 14, 12 are rotatably mounted, each housing being formed in two parts detachably secured together so that when the upper housing parts are removed the lower drum may be removed vertically. The drums are secured to shafts 36 rotatable in bearings 18 carried in chocks 22 supported in frames 27 forming lower parts of the housings 29 and in bearings 20 directly mounted in chocks 30 forming the upper part of the housing. Intermeshing gears 38, 40 on the shafts are driven by an electric motor and adjustable bearing assemblies 44, 46 are provided on the end of each shaft to facilitate alignment of the blade drums 12, 14. A feed shoot 58, Fig. 1 (not shown), conveys material to the drums and an arm 60, pivoted at 62, stops the passage of the material until the co-operating blades cut it and the severed portions pass into a disposal shoot 64. The drums may be driven by universal spindles extending from a stand adjacent the housings. One of the gears 38, 40 may be mounted on a sleeve which is keyed to a drum shaft 68, Fig. 3 (not shown), and has a worm-wheel 72 integral therewith which engages with a manually operable worm 74 mounted on the gear 38 to permit relative circumferential adjustment of the gear and hence the drum blades.
