Abstract
1,028,559. Tunnelling machines. NAUCHOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUTE OSNOVANY I PODZEMNYKH SOOROOZHENY. April 1, 1964. No. 13357/64. Heading E1F. In a tunnelling machine at least two annular shells are so supported by a structure, preferably a tunnelling shield, advanceable in the direction of the tunnel to be excavated that the shells may have a limited rotation with respect to the support and each other so that the series of parallely disposed knife members extending chordwise across the whole or part of each shell can be adjusted to form various grid patterns for slicing the earth to be excavated as the machine is advanced. Preferably rotation of at least the rearmost shell is by a motor driving a ring gear associated with the shell. A telescopic, digging tool-carrying arm is mounted inside the shield together with a rotatable loader drum for collecting severed earth falling from the knife members and transforming the earth to rearwardly extending conveyer means.
