Abstract

1,027,991. Roughening shoe soles &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Aug. 27, 1962 [June 28, 1961; Aug. 29, 1961], Nos. 23330/61 and 31012/61. Heading B4B. [Also in Division A3] A rotary cutter in or for a machine for roughening shoe soles &c. comprises a plurality of cutter teeth extending from a hub member, the cutter teeth being in two sets arranged alternately one from each set around a peripheral portion of the hub member, each cutter tooth of a first one of the sets having a cutting edge for making an undercut in the surface of a workpiece when operated upon by the cutter and each tooth of the other set having a cutting edge for making a severing cut through the undercut formed in the workpiece by the preceding tooth of the first set. As shown in Fig. 1, the cutter comprises an inverted cup-shaped hub portion having a rim portion 3 formed with recesses 2 in each of which a flat 12 on the stem portion 10 of a cuttertooth is clamped by means of a wedge 4 and set-screw 5. Each of the undercutting teeth, Figs. 2 to 4, has a sintered carbide tip 14 and faces 16, 18 which intersect to provide a cutting edge 20 which when the cutter is in the machine lies at only a slight angle to the work. The intersection of faces 22, 16 provides an edge which slopes inwardly and rearwardly in the direction of cutter rotation. As the cutter rotates, the cutting edge 20 cuts into the sole blank material and the undercut portion of the blank is then prised upwardly, as the tooth travels across the material, by the action of the face 16 and/or the edge between the faces 16, 22. Each severing tooth, Figs. 5 to 7, has a sintered carbide tip 30 and has a face 32 and an oblique face 34 which intersect to produce a cutting edge 36 extending upwardly and rearwardly in the direction of cutter rotation. The teeth are such that when mounted in the cutter rim, pointed tips 26, Fig. 4, and 38, Fig. 7, of the two types of teeth lie substantially at the same distance from the axis of the cutter. Hence the servering teeth act to sever those portions of the material of the blank which have been undercut and prised upwardly of the undercutting teeth. The oblique faces 34 of the severing teeth tend to deflect the chips of material cut off from the blanks towards the centre of the cutter where they are removed by a dust extraction unit. A modified form of undercutting tooth and a modified form of severing tooth for use in conjunction therewith are described.
