Abstract

A rod of silicon having a diameter of up to 40 mm. is zone-melted using an induction coil through which is passed a high frequency heating current of 2-6 mc/sec. and a high frequency shaping current of 500 c/sec. to 500 kc/sec. The initial rod may be produced by deposition of silicon from a gaseous compound on to a silicon core and may be fused to a monocrystalline seed of smaller diameter. The rod may be preheated by resistance or radiant heating. According to Fig. 2 (not shown) a tank circuit comprising a capacitor 11 and an induction coil 3 is connected to a high frequency generator supplying heating current through a capacitor 16 and a terminal 12, the other terminal being earthed, and is also connected to a high frequency generator supplying shaping current through a choke 13 and terminals 15 bridged by a capacitor 14.
