Abstract

<PICT:1026801/C6-C7/1> An electrolytic cell has one wall which can be moved under pressure of gas generated in the cell e.g. a diaphragm or piston. The cell contains an electrolyte and an anode which is coated with a metal which when D.C. is applied dissolves in the electrolyte without generation of gas, thus, giving a delay period before gas is generated by decomposition of the electrolyte after the coating is dissolved, and the piston moves outwards. The anode 15 is preferably platinum coated with copper and the electrolyte copper fluoborate dissolved in fluoboric acid solution or zinc, silver, or nickel and an acid solution of a salt of the metal. The anode is mounted in a tube 11 provided at the remote end with a piston 13 preferably made of plastic. The piston may operate a switch or a train of gears. After use a screw stopper 18 is removed and the piston pushed in to remove gas, and screw stopper returned when the bore 17 is again full of electrolyte. In a modification the piston is replaced by a flexible diaphragm, which when the centre is deflected by gas moves a sliding member outwards. By varying the thickness of the copper coating a delay period of 10 to 10,000 hours is available and adjustment can also be made by introducing a resistor in the D.C. power input.
