Abstract
1,026,643. Separating solid materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 3, 1964 [April 3,1963], No.13186/63. Heading B2H. Apparatus for separating non-spherical and spherical particles comprises a base 1 inclined to the horizontal in two directions, means 16 for feeding the particles near an upper region adjacent a fixed guide member 15 shaped so as to change the rolling axis of the particles, which are under the action of means imparting a relative motion between the base and particles in a direction such that the resultant paths of the particles terminate at different positions along the edge of the base according to their amount of out-of-roundness. As shown, particles are directed by a retarding spout of a hopper 16 on to an endless belt 1 which is moved by a variable speed motor 4 in the direction of the arrow C, for imparting a motion to the particles so that they move in parabolic paths down to trays 13 below. The more truly spherical particles fall into trays 13b, 13c and the rough ones into trays 13d, 13e. The belt may be made of metal, rubber, textile, synthetic plastic or paper-covered material, vibrated by a vibrator 17 and adjusted to the desired inclination about hinges 8 and 11a. The guide 15 serves to reorientate particles adhering together in pairs ("doublets") so that they can be conveyed together with exceedingly rough particles by the belt into an end shoot 18. When a vibrating member 21 is employed it serves to separate spherical particles from "doublets" which have escaped the influence of the guide 15, the member being vibrated in the direction of the arrow D to direct spherical particles into tray 13a and "doublets" into tray 13b. Both the guide and belt are connected to earth, the latter by whiskers 14a. In a modification, the guide 15 may take the form of a series of parabolic curves in stepped formation.
