Abstract

Pellets of alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides or silicates, such as sodium or calcium chloride or silicate, are formed by spray coating particles of the material with an aqueous solution thereof in one or more dilute zones in a fluidized bed, said zones being formed by injecting steam into the bed transverse to the flow of circulatory air. As in Fig. 1, particles of the material are fluidized in a vessel 1 by a stream of heated air from heater 6, which passes upwards through screen 10. Steam under pressure, together with a saturated aqueous solution of the material, is injected into the fluidized bed through a bifluid nozzle 1 and forms a dilute zone, as shown, in which the particles are coated, a solid coat being formed by the subsequent evaporation of the water. The pellets thus produced are drawn off through line 18 and elevator 3 to a screening mechanism 4, whence the oversized pellets are crushed at 5 and reintroduced to the bed through line 24, the underized pellets reintroduced through lines 22 and 24, and the pellets of the required size discharged into storage means through line 21. Any particles carried upwards, by the air, pass through line 16 to a cyclone 2 whence they are reintroduced into the bed through line 24.ALSO:Pellets of alkali metal pentachlorophenates such as sodium pentachlorophenate, or of alkali metal sulfonates of alkylated diphenyl oxide, are formed by spray coating particles of the material with an aqueous solution thereof in one or more dilute zones in a fluidized bed, said zones being formed by injecting steam into the bed transverse to the flow of circulatory air. As in Figure 1, particles of the material are fluidized in a vessel 1 by a stream of heated air from heater 6, which passes upwards through screen 10. Steam under pressure, together with a saturated aqueous solution of the material, is injected into the fluidized bed through a bifluid nozzle 1 and forms a dilute zone, as shown, in which the particles are coated, a solid coat being formed by the subsequent evaporation of the water. The pellets thus produced are drawn off through line 18 and elevator 3 to a screening mechanism 4, whence the oversized pellets are crushed at 5 and reintroduced to the bed through line 24, the undersized pellets reintroduced through lines 22 and 24, and the pellets of the required size discharged into storage means through line 21. Any particles carried upwards, by the air, pass through line 16 to a cyclone 2 whence they are reintroduced into the bed through line 24.
