Abstract
1,026,327. Packing rings. GARLOCK Inc. July 8, 1964 [July 25, 1963], No. 28112/64. Headings F2B and F2T. An annular, generally U- or V-shaped packing-ring blank, Fig. 4, comprises an impregnated fabric strip spirally wound into a number of intimately associated twins, each of which, as viewed in radial section of the blank, extends across the bottom of the U or V and into the limbs 24, 28 thereof. In making packing-rings, an annular body 10 of the spirally-wound fabric strip, Fig. 2, is folded outwardly or, as shown in broken lines, inwardly to form the blank, a spacer ring being used to keep the edges 18, 20 of the strip apart during folding and to form the recess inside the U or V. The fabric may be of cotton, rayon or asbestos and, preferably before being wound, is impregnated with uncured rubber or synthetic rubber. The blank is then cured in a mould of suitable shape so as to obtain V- or U-shaped packings, e.g. as shown in Fig. 5. The packings may be used in stuffing-boxes or with pistons and rams.
