[Also in Division E1] A spring-biased lazy-tongs balancing mechanism for vertically sliding windows comprises penultimate links 1 at the top, or bottom, or both the top and bottom of the mechanism, which continue past the pivot points 7 where they are connected to the outermost links 2, and are pivotally connected to tensioning members 8, whose other ends are connected to brackets 5 pivotally connected to the window 3 or the frame 4. The tensioning member may comprise two portions 12 and 14, which are telescoped together by a compression spring 13 fixed to the member 12 at the top end, and to the member 14 at the bottom, or it may comprise a cylinder 16 (Fig. 2, not shown), containing a sliding piston 20, 19, whose movement along the cylinder is resisted by concave washers 22 arranged back-to-back.
