[Also in Division B2] An apparatus for purifying and sterilizing room air comprises a cathode element 2 in the form of a metallic foil or grating attached to a wall or ceiling of the room and connected to a direct current source, the cathode element attracting foreign bodies present in the air and generating negative ions and radiating them into the surrounding atmosphere. Perforated plates or tiles 1 are interposed between the cathode element and the wall or ceiling and are made of dielectric insulating material which prevents radiation of the ions in the direction of the wall or ceiling. A protective grid-like covering element 3 is provided over the cathode. Sterilization of the air may be further increased by the addition of ozone which may be produced either separately and introduced into the air being purified or by setting up an electrostatic field between the cathode 2 and the element 3 which then becomes an anode, the passage of the air through the field resulting in the production of ozone. In the latter case, one of the elements 2, 3 may be adjustably movable relative to the other. Alternatively, the elements 2, 3 may be at a fixed distance from each other and a third movable cathode or anode is located between them. Further sterilization may be obtained by the incorporation of an ultra-violet light generator and/or radio-active elements to act directly on the air being purified. The ultra-violet light generator and the ozone generator can be employed simultaneously or independently.
