Abstract
1,024,958. Hopper discharge. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORPORATION. Dec. 1, 1964 [Dec. 9, 1963], No. 48794/64. Heading B8S. [Also in Division E2] A latch mechanism 17 for holding the pivotally mounted closure plate 12 of a bottom discharge hopper in the closed position is operable to release the plate 12 in two stages, first into a partially open position and then into the fully open position. The latch mechanism comprises a cam 21, which is adapted to engage a wear plate 16 on an extension 15 of the closure plate 12 and which is mounted on shafts 23 supported in angled slots 19 provided with offset recesses 20 in a pair of brackets 18. In operation, on rotating the cam 21 through 180 degrees in a counter-clockwise direction from the position shown by means of a tool 25, Fig. 4 (not shown), allowing the closure plate to move down to a partially open position, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which a projection 22 on the cam engages the outer end of the wear plate 16. Further rotation of the cam in the same direction causes the shafts 23 to move into the recess 20 allowing the closure plate to fall into the fully open position, after which the cam falls by gravity, after the removal of the tool 25, to the bottom of the slots 19. In closing the closure plate, the extension 15 pushes the cam into the recess 20. On further raising of the closure plate, the cam drops back into the bottom of the slots 19, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which the closure plate is held in the partially open position. The cam is then rotated by the tool 25 into engagement with a stop 26, Fig. 1. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the closure plate 27 and gasket 14 are adjustably mounted by means of a bolt 28 on a bar 29 which is pivotally mounted at 13 and which is engaged by the latch mechanism 17. Cams of different shapes, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), are also described.
