[Also in Division E2] A knock-down container consists of a pallet base, corner posts, sides and a top, the base, walls and top all being releasably secured to the posts by suitable fastening elements (see Division E2). Pallet construction.-The pallet comprises two layers of latticed channel section members 10, Fig. 9, spaced apart by short upright members of which those at the four corners provide sockets 13 for the reception of the comer posts. The load bearing surface may be covered by a " skin " 1 preferably (see Fig. 26) comprising four separate metal plates. The edges may also be covered by metal panels 25, Fig. 1, except for the fork track entering apertures, the edges of which may be cushioned. They may also be fitted with flushmounted projecting lugs 170 (Fig. 25, not shown) to facilitate stacking. Slinging.-The hollow corner posts 3, which fit into the sockets 13 of the pallet and are retained therein by cross pins, each contain a loose lifting link 35, Figs. 14 and 17, and a fixed lug 36 which allows the link to move between the broken line storage position and full line lifting position. Container assembly. - The posts 3 are assembled as described above and the walls are secured to the posts 3 by spring-loaded bolts on the walls fitting into holes in the posts. In Fig. 1 the walls 7 are panels on which the bolts 87 are mounted on the outer face; in Fig. 26 the walls comprise crossed struts 141 whose ends carry blocks each fitted with a key-operated bolt (Fig. 28, not shown). The top is either a panelled lid or a skeleton structure (as in Fig. 26) in each case including sockets which fit over the tops of the posts and are secured thereto by key-operated bolt members 43 as shown on section line 17-17 in Fig. 14. The lid may additionally be secured to the wall by key-operated locking devices 77 (Fig. 23, not shown). Wall fittings.-The wall 7, Fig. 1, may incorporate a porthole 110 with a releasable cover and lifting handles 100. The latter are mounted on rectangular section pivot shafts 101 which may be held, with the handles either parallel or normal to the wall, by latches 105. Labels.-Invoices, way-bills &c. may be attached to the pallet base and, in the case of the Fig. 1 form, to the walls and lid of the container. The document holder in the pallet is an indentation 26 in the panel 25 surrounded by retaining tags 27. That on the wall is a spring-loaded hinged frame 123 with a gauze window 127 and a locking bolt 129 which may be fitted with a wire-and-wax or like seal. Beneath the lid, documents may be held between a pair of plates 61, Fig. 6, resting at one end on a ledge 64 in the frame of the lid and fitting at the other end on a dependent spigot 66, snap fastening elements being incorporated in the ends 65 of the plates.
