Abstract

1,024,249. Gas-filter. COOPER'S MECHANICAL JOINTS Ltd. J. T. RYMER and S. P. WITCHELL. July 23, 1964 [July 30, 1963], No. 30192/63. Heading B1T. The inner face of a cylindrical filter element 7 is divided into arcuate sections by scoops 13 (Fig. 2, not shown) which deliver the filtered gas into a manifold 1, and a nozzle 15 rotates to cover the outlet 12 of each scoop in turn and delivers backwashing gas thereto. Conveniently an I/C engine is supplied with cleaned air by the filter and drives a pump which returns some of the cleaned air via a reservoir to a port 39, where it acts on a spring- loaded piston 33, 34. Rightward movement of the piston under the increasing air pressure allows a blast of air through ports 40, 41, 23 and into the nozzle 15. Subsequent leftward movement of the piston engages pawl 27 with ratchet 26, moving nozzle 15 to cover the next scoop 13. Shaft 19, carrying nozzle 15, also carries a plate 22 with one port 23, and port 23 and nozzle 15 communicate through a succession of passages 21 through a plate 20. The cylindrical filter element is woven wool, optionally with nylon, pleated and sandwiched between layers of wire gauze, and is sealed to a top cap 8 having a frusto-conical surface 11 with an opening 12 into each scoop 13. In Fig. 3 (not shown), plates 22, 20 are dispensed with, nozzle 15 opening directly into a chamber leading to port 41 and also opening at its lower end directly into the V-shaped upper edges of scoops 13.
