Abstract

A process for making laminated fibrous sheets comprises distributing irregular synthetic thermosetting resin particles whose greatest dimension is between 3 and 75 microns and the moisture content of which is between 3% and 6% over the upper surface of a base of fibrous material, subjecting the resin on the base length of material to heat at a temperature sufficient to render it tacky but insufficient to cure it and thus to cause it to adhere to the base length of material, adhering a further length of fibrous material to the tacky resin, applying further resin to the upper surface of the aforesaid further length of material and subjecting the resin to heat at a temperature sufficient to render it tacky and cause it to adhere to said further length of material, if necessary dividing the length of laminated material into sheet lengths and applying heat and pressure to each laminated length or sheet length to effect consolidation thereof. The upper surface of said further length of fibrous material may have a decorative effect applied thereto by printing or the application of powdered pigment with the resin prior to lamination, an overlay length of translucent material being adhered thereto. Specified base lengths comprise a plurality of laminated Kraft paper sheets bonded together with dry phenolformaldehyde resin. Cellulose pulp is specified for the further lengths of fibrous material. Wood or rayon fibre paper is specified as the overlay. Spray-dried melamine formaldehyde resin is the specified resin for the process of the invention; it may be admixed with ureaformaldehyde resin. In Fig. 1, a continuous web 1 of paper is drawn from a reel 2, covered with dry finely-divided melamine-formaldehyde resin from a vibrating sieve 3, the resin being heated by infra-red heater elements 8, a further length of fibrous material 9 from reel 10 being engaged with the softened resin and adhered thereto by rollers 11 and 12, a further coating of resin being applied by 13 and softened by heat.
