Abstract

1,197,229. Bonded fibre-plastics laminates. K. H. SCHEUFELEN, [trading as PAPIER FABRIK SCHEUFELEN]. 9 Oct., 1967 [11 Oct., 1966], No. 46018/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and D2] A paper/plastics foil comprises paper processed from a pulp filled with a dispersion of a thermoplastics material and provided with a film of plastics on at least one face. The paper side of the foil may be impregnated with a thermosetting synthetic resin and bonded to the surface of chipped board, fibreboard, plywood. The foil may be made by adding to an ordinary pulp containing cellulose fibres suitable for paper making a finely dispersed thermoplastic polymer, processing the material into a sheet and applying a film of plastics to at least one side of the almost dry sheet. The finished paper/plastics foil may be printed on at least one side. The film may consist of a heat-sealing plastics and may be applied by use of a dispersion or by extrusion. The paper/plastics foil can also be applied under pressure by the hotsealing film side to chip board or hard board or to a layer of absorbent soda kraft papers impregnated with phenol formaldehyde resin. An unpigmented light weight paper which becomes transparent after resin impregnation and pressing may be pressed at the same time on to the top face of the paper/plastics foil. In the examples 1 a pigmented cellulose suspension after milling has added to it an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of vinyl chloride, retention agents e.g. polyacrylic amide, galactomannan, sodium aluminate also being added and the pH adjusted to 6.8. The suspension is formed into a paper web and a film of plastics applied to the top and/or underside of the web by application of an aqueous dispersion or solution by glue press, air brush, roller or doctor knife; (2) a dispersion of a styrol-butadiene copolymer is used to provide the filling and the plastics film; (3) a dispersion of a copolymer of acrylic butyl ester and vinyl acetate is used; (4) a dispersion of a copolymer of methacrylic butyl ester and methacrylic ethyl ester is used; (5) a vinyl propionate polymer is used; (6) a dispersion of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl palmitate is used; (7) melamine formaldehyde resin is used as a wet stabilizing agent for the pulp; (8) a paper/plastics foil made in accordance with Examples 1-7 is printed on the film side and provided with a polyvinyl chloride foil, and applied by its paper side using an adhesive to chip board or fibre board or a sheet of metal or wood; (10) a paper/plastics foil made in accordance with Examples 1-7 is printed on a paper side, the printed paper side faced with an overlaid paper impregnated with melamine formaldehyde resin and then pressed with its hot-sealing film side on to chip board, fibreboard or wood; (11) paper/plastics foil made in accordance with Examples 1---7 is printed on the paper side, covered on the printed paper side with an overlaid paper impregnated with melamine formaldehyde resin and pressed by its hot-sealing film side on to a layer of soda kraft papers impregnated with formaldehyde resin, below which lie a decorative paper impregnated with melamine formaldehyde resin; (12) the procedures of Examples 1-11 are repeated but the paper to which plastics film is applied is impregnated with a thermosetting synthetic resin e.g. melamine, phenol and/or urea formaldehyde resin.
