Abstract

1,137,290. Amylose-paper laminate. A. E. STALEY MFG. Co. 13 Dec., 1966 [12 Jan., 1966], No. 55680/66. Heading B5N. An amylose film is bonded to a cellulosic substrate by wetting one or both of the contacting surfaces with water prior to bonding, and then applying pressure. The amylose film may be preformed, or may be formed by extrusion immediately prior to bonding, in which ease less pressure is needed to form a strong bond. The cellulosic material is preferably paper, e.g. kraft paper. Bonding is suitably effected between nip rolls, one of which may be heated (for bonding a preformed film) or chilled (for bonding a freshly extruded film) and the other of which may be resilient. The water is suitably introduced between the layers as they reach the rolls in an amount such that a slight excess is forced out by the rolls. The rolls may have a speed greater than the speed of extrusion, so that the amylose film becomes stretched and oriented. The amylose used is preferably unsubstituted. It may contain a polymeric plasticizer, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol and, less preferably, a polyhydric alcohol or aminoalcohol plasticizer.
